Proves you right? You're still basing your assessment on tiny amount of games. Any striker who isn't woeful can score hat-tricks against poor teams in one-offs. I'm not saying this to knock Welbeck. He could well be awesome for all we know and I'd love it if he was because he seems a likeable football player which is always a bonus. But I'm bored of this over-rating of players before it's due.
I want to clarify an earlier point. I honestly don't mind Giroud here as a backup, he gives us a different option, but he shouldn't be starting for a team with aspirations of the title. The issue with this new contract is that both he and Welbeck are now on long term deals, and even though he was brilliant tonight, it's still early with Welbeck, i would have preferred a proven top level goalscorer, and both of these guys on long term deals means that a new striker is unlikely to happen.
I do tend to agree with that and I would have liked to seen us bring in a proper top class striker. But I still maintain that both Giroud and Welbeck between them will be able to do the job.
Speaking of new contracts, as i don't know how to start a new thread, i figured i'd just mention here that Arteta's been given an extension until 2016. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/mikel-arteta-joins-arsenal-contract-signing-4354175
