I remember the first time I heard that. Although it was the shorter version released in this country. Knocked me out. If Carlsberg could play a guitar... They reckon he was inspired by BB King coming into the studio whilst they were recording this. They did a few versions both with strings and without and it was BB who suggested they release this version with strings on. Funny enough when they wanted Mac to mime for a promo video Peter Green picked up a Strat which was the nearest one. Whilst on the Albatross promo video he is "playing" a Gibson Les Paul when he actually used a Strat on the recording.
Sadly OLM I played Starman and The Jean Genie on it and Trev corrected me (very kindly of course) on a couple of wrong notes! I know you know this already - but he really was a lovely fellow - as all the Bolder family. Only Ian left now!
The biggest selling Gibson is the SG. Les Paul demanded his name was taken off it as he had nothingbto do with its develooment and they renamed it the SG, for Solid Guitar. This lady was one of the first to use it, (these shows beat Songs Of Praise), a lot of artists cite her as an intfluence including Hendrix. A lot of people who went on to be well known in the world of rock in this country purchased an SG because they saw the performance on TV of the second clip in a programme filmed on a rainy Manchester area station. Notable as well for it being the first time a radio mic had been used for vocals on a live show in this country.
The number plate on the Lambo in the clip below reminds me of the Roller that used to be parked in the front of Boothferry Park on match days in the 60's. Licence plate was HN 888 - belonged to Harold Needler obv. Heady days.
OK guys - as this is about Gibsons, here's Frampton live again from the 70's with his Les Paul....and hair!!.......
They used to say (and I have no idea if this is true) - that a Strat would roll off the production line every 30 minutes but it took 3 weeks for a Gibson (maybe Gibson just had a slow line)
