Only been sacked once, in 1985, for absenteeism. Since then I have jumped before being pushed on numerous occasions, but never let any ****er fire me.

Took voluntary redundancy in 2012 after 21 years on the Post; walked away with a tidy sum, but it soon goes if you haven't got much coming in, and in the four years between leaving Royal Mail and starting on the railway, I discovered how the balance of power has shifted heavily in favour of employers; many firms want to rinse their staff, while paying them **** all. And good employers are continually being undercut by the bad.

Join a Union, is my advice to anyone who is not their own boss.

Never been sacked. Once didn't turn up to work for a week and had to go and pick up money owed to me.

Manager started to give me a bollocking about not coming to work or ringing in and having nerve to ask for money etc. I started going mad saying "you sacked me you prick". He said "oh you're the second person to say that" and was very apologetic and paid me

Basically we, as in me and a mate and another lad who became a mate, had got a permanent job for the 3 months during the summer holidays from college. The plan was that we would quit once college was about to start and would say we were sacked

Thick as **** plan but it worked a treat

  4. If I had signed up for early severance 2 years ago I would have got pretty much 2 years salary more or less tax free. If I went now I would get 10 months. I don't really mind as I had no intention of leaving - so just hope I survive 20 more fornthe full pension!

The sickener is that due to Brexit they have loosened the rules in people rejoining as they are desperate to get the knowledge back. And a lot of the ****ers are coming back on promotion or through consultancies. We also let a lot of the **** ones go and they're all back as they know how to do the interviews and because we have taken on so many new people they get interviewed bynthose who never knew them...

when i left surrey and went back north, i winged a job at siemens making microchips, i didnt have a clue, but got it.

I was only there 4 months when they announced it was closing..

So i went looking for jobs.

Got £6,5k to leave in the september, but would have got 10 if stayed till theJan closing date.

But left, and started a new job job the next week with the 6.5. and pissed it up and booked a holiday, as i thought Jan was a dodgy time to start looking.

  6. There's definitely always a choice to be made with these things. Sounds like we both made the right one :)

It was the thought of leaving and having a new job to start and the cash in pocket, rather than taking that chance

Made redundant 7 or so years back. Was a blessing in hindsight but didn't seem it at the time. I was a young lawyer at the firm and they were clearly trying to shift on some of the older (more expensive) employees (shock horror, even though it was a redundancy they had specific people in mind). When they offered voluntary with a nice package I realised it was an opportunity to leave a profession I wasn't enjoying. I was then unemployed for a few months whilst assessing what to do next with my life (29 years old at the time) and I'm sure I was depressed now I think back on it. Anyway, been in my new profession ever since and I much prefer it, happily work all through to retirement now!

  9. These things certainly change your perspective. I'm in a big organisation so move around teams a bit. Got promoted in 2013 but was being treated pretty badly by two senior managers and it was beginning to affect my health. Took a job at the grade below just to escape and that was pretty much unheard of.
That job was brilliant, and so we're the people, but when Brexit came I was asked to move back to the old team which was now free of the two buggers mentioned before. Got promoted within a year and haven't looked back. It wasn't the best of experiences but coming through the other side has made it almost worth it. Certainly makes you appreciate decent managers and colleagues and the way you treat other people.

I got made redundant from my last job and got a great pay off package. The dopey bastards begged me to come back as the new guy had all the qualifications but no nous. Signed a six month deal that was bigger than my redundancy package with first class train travel too. <laugh>

Got made redundant from my last job 15 years ago, after 12 years service. Took the plunge and used the money to set myself up with my current web business and never looked back. Thanks suckers. <cheers>

Was made redundant back in 2004, was in a finance role and wasn't enjoying it any way.
Was there 5 years and got about £3k pay off, which i thought was pretty good, was only 21 at the time.
Like Haslam, I used to time off work to reflect and decide on a change of career.
Went in to a different field and have never looked back, much happier now.
