Unfortunately, a lot of the world learns and uses American English which compounds the issue (strong American culture and it being more accessible and phonetic). I suppose English is living and changing all the time due to useage whether we like it or not. Look at the last ten or so years, text speak terms such as OMG or LOL are now spoken as well as being written* * by twats, kids and the mentally ill.
