My point regarding Scientific Theories being fact may have been misconstrued. My point was that Evolution isn't a Theory, it is a fact. HOW Evolution occurs, of course, is described using the Evolutionary Theory, which attempts to unify the available, supporting data, which amounts to A LOT. As you well know (I now realise <laugh>).

As you say, such a Theory is falsifiable and requires just one piece of evidence to disprove it, which will never happen. The famous (or infamous, to Creatards) 'Precambrian Bunny', if you will.

I didn't mean to suggest that you shared a Creationist viewpoint, though your previous post was conducive to approval of a "teach the controversy" method of teaching.

Wey I didn't mean it like that, more like it seemed pretty harmless for me personally and their strict "disciprin" (see if you get the reference) makes the kids get the grades, if you could take the good parts and leave out the bad, you'd have a perfect school really <ok>.
I'd wrote out a post before your second last and deleted it upon seeing that reply, it said that you can't really convey your points well on t'internet, especially with a lack of tone - we've just seen that twice now <laugh>!

You say it seemed pretty harmless, but I really don't see it like that. The point is, there is a conflict between Genesis and modern Science. Try as they like to remonstrate these absurdities with Biologists, Physicists et al, Christians always fail. It is based entirely on faith, and there is NOTHING remotely scientific about that.

The Bible claims that some Insects have four legs and that Bats are Birds - it's truly ridiculous, and I could spend hours writing about the unimaginably stupid **** to be found in that book.

Nothing winds me up, but the debate between Scientific Fact and Creationist Fiction is the single thing I feel strongly about. I see it as just plain wrong to even suggest to impressionable children, teenagers and young adults that the story of Genesis represents a viable alternative to Science. You may not see it that way, so fair enough.

I guess it's because the majority of Christians I've met aren't the literal variety so don't take everything the Bible says as gospel (pardon the bad pun), I mean I studied the bible a lot as a bairn for RE at school and also the history behind what religious texts were chosen and why, the alternative texts and even how the christian faith evolved - what they believe in at the start and what they believe in now, how it's changed etc and a lot of the early Christians right up until protestantism (sp?) didn't take the Bible in it's literal form, I can only go by what I've read, but I'm sure it's only as it was also translated into modern languages that it was started taken literally (probably a combination of the strict reform rules of early protestantism and mistranslation, I've read up a lot of books on how it was mistranslated a lot due to the likes of English not having enough words to describe certain things - the original words for day for example can mean day or a period of time, so 7 days could have meant a long period of time).
Again the pure form of the religion was supposed to go hand in hand with science, it documents the earth being round long before scientists accepted that as true, but it is full of contradictions as well.

I just see creationism as another form of this really: http://theflatearthsociety.org/cms/ & a great deal of my fellow students realised the same, it's all a load of codswallop. In fact even of the Christians in my class, I don't think there was indeed one who actually believed in Creationism themselves.
Again obviously you feel strongly about it and have your reasons, I have mine why I believe it's been relatively harmless - certainly from first hand experience and knowledge as they weren't exactly forcing it upon me to believe it or even think it was an alternative, more like this is what some of us believe - obviously we can't prove it's true or not, if you want to believe that fine, but we'd encourage you to make up your own mind and the evidence points strongly to evolution, so it's pretty much against us. I mean it was such a small thing, and the biology teachers themselves believe in evolution and it was taught really impartially that the media has really overblown it being taught, at least at Emmanuel and my other school anyway.

Gone to the end of this thread, started with a funny video, and now a full on debate about evolution & Science!

I like things like this where people stand up against the media and, rightly so, 'win'.
It's always good seeing dicks like this get shot down.

Alas, it's a big fight! No one's gonna win against the media, especially when most of it's ran or owned by Rupert bloody Murdoch...
