Calling any aficionado of the mis-shapen ball game. Watched England Ladies yesterday....good game. Rugby with flying ponytails and plaits. I know the main rules of the game but not the nuances....so need clarification. At a lineout close to the Canadian line, England threw the ball and it was caught by an England player who was then being marshalled (carried) towards the line. The Canadians held back and did nothing until the ref yelled at them, 'The ball's at the front, the ball's at the front.' The Canadians then rushed to try and stop the England maul (?), but were too late and England scored. I seem to remember something like this happening in a men's game earlier in the year and it was discussed as if the team not participating were being unsporting and a try was awarded. Anyone know what this is about?
Well the F1 may have been dull, but once again the F2 was thrilling. Leclerc in his last F2 race taking the win from 7th on the grid with a quite stunning last lap overtake. Boy is special.
You remind me of me from about 25 years ago. Until I gave in and admitted that it was largely boring.
Didn’t see the game, so not exactly sure what happened. My guess is that it was an English line-out close to the Canadian line. Canada don’t compete on the throw but attempt to stop the maul, as they’re not allowed to pull it down. England too strong and scored? Don’t understand the “held back and did nothing” unless they didn’t commit players but hung around behind the maul (usually offside but if there are less than a certain number competing- think it’s only one or two) hoping to stop the ball when it came out. When the refs called, they realised they needed to try and hold back the maul, but too late. Will have to watch the highlights to understand it!
For those who I haven’t bored yet, I went to my first NFL game yesterday in Atlanta, and it was BRILLIANT!!!! Loved every minute of it. The atmosphere, the people, the game - everything. If any of you go to the US, put a NFL game on your list!

I kept standing...didn’t do the hand on heart crap though like the other 71 thousand people there. Just looked that up actually, thought it was less, but the attendance was 71,300.

Great post, No. 7. Love the pics. However, I spent about a week at a game in New Jersey one afternoon in 2000. Giants vs Browns I think it was. For about 90 minutes play, the whole thing lasted about 5 hours. It was cold, it was boring, the longest “play” was about 5 seconds ..... no wonder the yanks have such a short span of attention! Then went to baseball expecting it to be dull and loved it. More strategic and interesting (though with a few weird rules - their best hitter comes in, so they “walk” him to first base without allowing him a hit. WTF?). THEN I went to see the NJ Devils ice hockey. That was more like it. Blood and thunder and the occasional game of hockey. LOVED it! Enjoy your time in the US of A. As Laces (I think it was - can’t be arsed to go back and look) said - they sing their frigging anthem at every opportunity, which can be annoying. Even before a go kart race my boy was in! Still a great country though - despite their tosser of a Prez.
I’m with you there Dave - loved baseball and Ice Hockey whilst I was out there. I went to see the Chicago Bulls vs Knicks in the basketball though - Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman etc. It was the most boring sporting event I’ve ever witnessed.
When I was over there when I was 14 with my football team we stayed in the same hotel as an u15/16 ice hockey team that were playing in the equivalent of the nationals for their age group. As we were about 40 14/15/16 year old kids we got chatting (they had great fun shouting "****er" at anyone they could as nobody knows what it means over there, or didn't anyway). Was crazy though, they were the champions of Maryland and had won some tournament after where they were representing about 5 states in the nationals, ESPN interviewing them and their families, their whole town had come to follow them and every game televised to the whole nation, was a whole different level to what you'd expect here. We went to watch them in one of their games and I did enjoy it, but sport over there is insane. In our first game against the state champs for Florida about 4000 people turned up as they were playing an English team and we are the founders of the sport. Playing at midday in April in Florida the day after arriving was not a good look and we got dicked
I loved the last baseball game i saw - about 2 years ago. Atlanta (again) Braves v Washington Nationals. Again, good atmosphere and like yesterday I felt like I was on a movie set Agree about the National Anthem, though on Sunday it was quite rousing with 74,000 singing it all hands on heart, waving the flag (and no kneeling) etc. But as Second Stain mentioned on another thread, there is nothing like the Italian Anthem to rouse you at a world cup...we'll have to wait to hear that for a bit.
Only the Italians could have a national anthem which sounds like an opera. Love it. Together with Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, it must be my favourite anthem!
