If Merc had pitted Lewis under VSC then it would have prevented this occurring. Completely unnecessary risk to take at that stage of the race.
Maybe, but no one could have seen that coming. And Lewis was cruising. Max was over 10 seconds behind when the SC came out. It's daylight robbery. End of.
Or pitted immediately into the safety car, forcing the opposite scenario: Max in front on old hards, Lewis in second on new softs. They hung Hamilton out to dry.
Is this kind of thing high stakes enough to warrant going that far ? It terms of cost. I don’t know enough about it
I doubt that; not at all Lewis' style. Credit to everyone involved today honestly: there was quite a bit of hard racing between Red Bull and Mercedes, and all of it quite fair.
Yeah. I wish that we'd gotten that final lap with the two of them both on fresh rubber (which conveniently would have also eliminated the backmarker drama), it would have been utterly mental.
The irony is this was all caused by Latifi, driver for Mercedes sister team. Wouldn't be surprised to see him lose his seat for next season.
The rules are that once a car is removed from the track, the drivers need one lap to rearrange themselves and it includes all the cars. This meant the race would have finished under the safety car and Lewis would have won. To race the final lap, as they did, means no unlapping. The FIA said the first five or six cars could unlap, not the whole field and allowed it to happen before the final lap. Had Mercedes known the FIA were going to breach their own rules and had 4 Laps to tell Mercedes, Lewis could have pitted to softs and moved up to first place on the final lap. That is not fair or equitable.
It wasn't a red flag incident, though. And again, while it's extraordinarily bad luck for Hamilton, who fully deserved to win today, what made it unfair is that Mercedes reeeeeeeeeeeally ****ed up. At the time that the safety car came out, they should have fully expected that the restart would happen with Max directly behind Hamilton, because that's what generally happens. They should have been the first car in the pits.
