The charitable explanation is that Lewis thought Max would be behind him under braking, and would have to back out, but Max had the better line and could brake later. Lewis was carrying too much speed to hit the apex, and he was always going to drift wide...or spin.
Wow, wow, wow. Well that was extraordinary by Lewis - up there with his best ever drives for me. Obviously as a Charles fan I’m gutted for him, because he drove an incredible race (and battered everyone else), but that right there us why Lewis is a 7 x WDC (and also why Charles will be a champion too at some stage).
Some in Red Bull are calling for Lewis to be suspended for the next GP which is totally over the top. In hindsight Lewis deserved his penalty, he could have turned into the apex more. But I still maintain it's a racing incident between 2 aggressive drivers. I feel for Max and am deeply relieved he walked away from the crash and seems to have come away unscathed. But this will only increase the rivalry between the two. Could be in for some great drama in the second half of the season.
I am glad Max appears OK. I have no sympathy for him . He now knows Lewis won't bow down to him anymore . Max is quick to dish it out and , in fairness to him this time , he has not slagged off Lewis ( yet ) . But he is a buy although maturing all the time and far better than he was , also Horner and Helmet make me sick .
I think that was Lewis letting Max know that he won't be pushed around by him. It maybe needed to happen in some ways - so reminiscent of Senna and Prost. Saying that, I don't expect Max to give Lewis any quarter at all from now. Spicy. I love it.
He's called Hamilton disrespectful and unsportsmanlike for celebrating openly at the end. I think Hamilton will have to be careful now, if Verstappen has an advantage towards the end of the season I wouldn't be surprised to see him deliberately take Hamilton out in a race should he get ahead.
Dangerous game for Lewis to be playing, though, because most scenarios there involve him losing. If both are knocked out of the race, that's a win for Max...one fewer race for Hamilton to catch up, and +3 points from the sprint race. If Max is knocked out but the race isn't red-flagged, Lewis has to pit for repairs and comes out at the back of the field, and with a 10-second penalty thereafter. Even with his car, he'd be lucky to walk away from the weekend with more than one or two points gained. He got lucky in that the scenario that played out was basically the only one in which it was to his benefit.
Oh I absolutely agree. It was waiting to happen though, and now it has. The hyperbole from Horner and Marko doesn’t help. I get frustrated by some of the reaction - everything has become a little emasculated from the days of legend and yore. I’m not saying those days were necessarily right, but this (though I agree it’s Lewis slightly at fault) was hardly crime of the century. I’m all for it. Especially if Charles picks up the pieces!
