    I hear what you say, Jasper, and I entirely agree. But when I as a moderator get criticised by others for allowing politics to be discussed on a sports thread, what do you suggest I do?

    The only good news is that the money talking is ultimately a reflection of public sentiment, because big business doesn't stick its neck out unless doing so is a net benefit. For decades the smart play for business was to keep quiet to avoid pissing anyone off, because pissed-off people don't buy your stuff. In recent years the balance of public opinion has shifted and it's been made more and more clear to businesses that neutrality ain't an option, and consequently you see advertisers leveraging their dollars in this fashion.
