Edmund starts against Cilic in the Australian semi-final. Nearly broke Cilic's serve twice in first game...but couldn't quite do it while Cilic was settling in. Holds serve. 1-1 in first set.
Two sets down now. I wondered if this might be the end of the already mighty impressive run. Edmund looks off the pace here. Must take a bit of getting used to playing all these matches so close together.
Just got back to see Edmund lost in straight sets....when I left he was playing a tie break in the 2nd set. Nothing to be ashamed of....he is extremely promising and looks like being a very good player indeed.
I feel Chung will wear Federer down and win the other semi!!! And win on Sunday!! Looks to be a brilliant ladies final. Pleased for them both as neither has won a slam to date, so one will be off running by close on play on Saturday!!
I need a new crystal ball. I got that completely wrong. Who to cheer on Sunday? Everyone bar Cilic supporters would love to see RF get number 20, but then again it would be great to see a seasoned campaigner add to his one GS!! I notice Cabal and Farah of Colombia reached the Men's Doubles final. Let's hope they can win the title to take back to South America, and encourage more from that Continent and that country to participate in the sport. What those countries need is investment in their infrastructure which is difficult when their products are cheap and imports so expensive.
Halep vs Wozniacki has been a really enjoyable match. 1 set each and they've been quite evenly matched. Wozniacki has looked as though she's going to pull away a couple of times but Halep just won't give up and is now 4-3 (including a break) up in the last set. I have to say I'm really looking forward to Serena Williams retiring, this is so much more interesting than just watching her overpower the other players.
It is a pity that one had to lose but well done to both for putting on a splendid show. Perhaps this year the ladies' singles has been more competitive than the men, so advancing their rights to equal prize money. However, I am a big Serena Williams fan and hope she can win two more slams to assume the title of GOAT. She may not be everybody's favourite given her demeanour on court at times, re US Open in 20??, but I love the way she plays when she has built up a head of steam. However, the clever players will employ the drop shot to get her running around, and sap her energy so the odds are not in her favour.
For those interested, the Davis Cup (Spain v GB) starts on Friday with BBC coverage. Be interesting to see how Edmund does as our best player now Murray is injured (and possibly retired from Davis Cup)
Liam Broady 2 sets down in Davis Cup....doing better in third set, but missed opportunity to take it. Tie break...Broady loses 6-8. Going to be tough here...not only missing Murray, but Edmund injured as well. GB support is so loud....then I saw why. Full of our supporters in matching T-shirts. A long weekend in sunny Spain watching tennis....why not! Beats going to West Brom.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/42917936 Cameron Norrie (who?) came back from 2 sets down to beat Bautista and level the Davis Cup.
Amazing story! As they said in the commentary, quite possibly the best ever debut performance in the Davis Cup! The lad had barely even played on clay before and was up against a pretty good player too!
Couldn't watch it live and had to wait till late for it to appear on the website. Jumped the first two sets (of course), then watched the last three....took me to 12.30. This was not a case of one player collapsing....this was 3 good sets of tennis with long rallies and games, but Bautista couldn't handle him. Wonderful touch and great fitness. Whatever happens to Cameron from now on, he will always have Marbella.
Murray/Inglot lose first set...important match as we are unlikely to win 2 (or even 1) singles match.
When oh when are the French going to adopt the philosophy that tries win matches. They should review the hammering they got from NZ in 2015 and realise that their rubbish rugby will win nowt!! Even England who have often been overly conservative, can play a more expansive game these days, and it is bringing its rewards.
