I don't really understand his logic there

Ok, so, the referee makes a mistake. A dumb one. The VAR ref calls him over and says "that was a mistake, you need to give a penalty."

A penalty is given, Chelsea score, incident is over. Who cares.

On the flip side, the referee makes a mistake, VAR doesn't get involved and they don't give a penalty. The manager kicks off, the media get asking questions, arguments begin referee is investigated.

Mike Dean being a wimp causes massive drama which could have been averted by simply giving a pen.
