That's not true though. You are allowed to shield the ball on any part of the pitch. You'll often see (canny) DM's shield the ball and use their body to turn the oppo, so that they can then release the ball forwards.

The shield bit I have no problem with ... but stepping over the ball into an opponents path to block them can be dangerous play ... but it's just my view and I'm never going to find the corner flag antics palatable, either way ... so will leave it there.

No one would care if their team done it when leading a final narrowly with minutes to go.

May as well be good at it.

Corner flag tactics is good for wasting time. I also have a remedy for it, take them out. It gets you a yellow, but do it enough times and teams will think twice before employing those tactics against you, especially with league teams who value their player for the next game. <whistle>

Shielding the ball is an art form

arm stretched, palm out facing opponent and gently resting/pushing on opponent applying gentle pressure as and when required in order to maintain distance between ball and opponent and totally frustrating opponent till he lashes out and you win a free kick to waste yet more time to help see your team home at a critical stage of the game and help relieve your bredren from their burdens.

you’re a team player or you’re that dickhead who thinks your gonna make it 3-1 and instead the game finishes 2-2

no high 5 for you at FT

You won’t get no ‘it’s ok bro, happens to us all’

be more like

‘U feelin orite?, u think we playin on your X box? **** off, ****, **** you, don’t chat to me’

It’s all about the silky passing and the hoof balls into the channel.

There’ll be a PowerPoint about it somewhere.

exactly...if you’re the guy trying to get the ball and you can’t quite reach...my experience has taught me...stretch for it as much as possible and you can usually put in a sly scrape of the studs down the leg but it looks like a legitimate attempt nonetheless so a booking at most. Failing that I always found that if his hand is on your midriff as a shielding mechanism, you could(if the angles are right and you’re on the ref’s blind side)bend the **** out of opponents fingers...man soon take it off.

The dark arts daddy I was

Yup. It was always a simple rule for me, if you want to fook around by the corner flag expect to get taken out.

<laugh> fair play ... (or not)

Can you imagine what Tommy Smith, Ron Harris or Norman Hunter would have done to some fanny doing that by the corner flag ... they'd have needed a road kill unit to clean up the aftermath <laugh>

It’s not. Perhaps you’re not explaining the situation properly but if I beat you to be in control of the ball then it’s not a foul, even if you run into me. If I spear you in half and neither of us are in control of the ball then that’s rugby and I’m not sure why rugby has anything to do with a corner flag tussle.

If you step over the ball to protect it in the direction of an incoming opponent it could be interpreted as an over the top tackle ... which is where my thought process is going ... Youri Tielemans got a booking for doing just that (rightly so) ... he mistimed it and got the blokes leg ... but the intent was to shield the ball not malicious ... hence why he got yellow rather than a red, in my view ...

All things aside it just irritates me ... even when it's my lot doing it and it achieves its' aim ... but enjoyed the debate <cheers>
