I used to prefer aways, but these days even as a pass holder, I can never get a ticket due to the ‘closed shop’ previous purchase history rules that mean away tickets never get to general sale. People just keep their purchase history going, even if they can’t get to the game, choosing instead to sell the tickets to mates etc. It rewards loyalty which is fine, but to the detriment of about 28,000 other pass holders.
Yeah I know what you mean about keeping history going. Since I gave up my ST, other people have generally picked up tickets for me or I've purchased them on match day, but I made a point for the first home game of getting the tickets myself in advance, so that it keeps my history for any cup games going. Because generally rule of thumb is ST's then History. Problem is with purchasing tickets on match day, they don't allocate them to your account. Problem is our ground only holds around 10.5k....so if you get a good cup game, 3k (max) of those tickets will go to away support. That leaves 7.5k, but we have probably 3k ST Holders this season due to the reduced pricing, most of the decent seats in the Rainham End centre blocks have already been taken by them. That then only leaves 4.5k tickets available but that could be anywhere in the house. To get a decent place in the RE, you have to be pretty much on the ball and know the block layouts and the higher the better.
I always preferred the away games because the vocal support is far better, but it gets too much the older you get
