There will always be historical reaasons for reductions in attendances aside from league, rather than just looking at stats, my point was, there was no restrictions at Wolves when i went there, so as i said it had gained an additional 12k in plastics. Not really sure why you've become a Wolves defender though

Fair play. Early 80s attendances were poor.
For example Sunderland averaged 16181 in Division 1, 1982/83, when R Park held over 36k.
In fact they had four seasons in Division 1 in 80s and averaged 19,608, 17,353, 16,181, 18,345. Top crowd 35,041.
They went down to Div 2 and averaged 13,601, 17,425, 14,880, 17,880. Top crowds around 29k.
When they went back to Div 1 in 1990 averaged 22639 top crowd 31k.
Back to Div 2 and averages of 18622 (29224 highest) in 91/2 and 17260 (28098) in 92/3
Looks like capacity went down to 22k is 1993
I went to League Cup tie there in 85 and Cup tie 92 and atmospheres were some of the noisiest I have experienced
I believe, i could be wrong, you would need to check with the Sunderland lads, it was why they had to move out of Roker, it was an old decading ground no longer fit for purpose. It's standing areas no longer complied with safety standards.
My point was originally made about Wolves a league one club at the time. They had no restrictions on the ground and it was within their current home. I'm only talking five years ago, not decades.

I’m not defending Wolves. Just pointing out it’s dumb to compare a team’s support in one isolated match in division three with a huge cup tie when they’re the seventh best team in the country.
If we’re using Sunderland as the example of great support, and it’s impressive to get the crowds they do, then it’s fair to point out they can fluctuate by 12000 too in the same season and at the new ground.
Personally I’d rate a team who are small but can stay reasonably consistent over one where 10000 disappear and re-appear.
