he was jumping for the ball, that's how he was knocked off balance, and you don't jump when the ball gets to you, other wise you'd be jumping too late.
It's a moot point anyway, the penalty was given.

The Law says:

If a player in an offside position is moving towards the ball with the intention of playing the ball and is fouled before playing or attempting to play the ball, or challenging an opponent for the ball, the foul is penalised as it has occurred before the offside offence

The foul didn’t happen before the offside offence though. Nice try.
