The number of foreign players permitted in Premier League squads could be cut from 17 to 12 if a proposal from the FA on how to navigate Brexit is approved.

The plans, which will be presented to the 20 Premier League chairmen on Thursday, would oblige top tier clubs to ensure at least half of their 25-man squad is 'homegrown'.

Informal discussions on how to deal with Brexit when Premier League clubs are so reliant on freedom of movement for European talent have been ongoing for months.

The FA and the Premier League are understood to be keen to come to an agreement quickly to avoid a situation where all EU players have to fulfil the same criteria as non-EU players do now in order to get a work permit.

Clubs are currently allowed up to 17 overseas players in their squads but the FA's proposal would reduce that number by five, to 12.

I'd definitely be for it.

I'm not sure what would happen to the immediate foreigners already playing in the country but just say theoretically clubs had to sell enough to meet the quota, they wouldn't sell their star foreign players, it'll be the ones taking up squad places. So in theory, even short term, there wouldn't be much of a decrease in quality. Long term, it'll pick back up to whatever standard it was because with a greater emphasis on investing in youth, clubs will be producing good calibre homegrown players at a better rate.

It just is mate, that's why English clubs do it. There is also the issue that once they are getting a decent wage they aren't out on the piss and shoving it up their nose like the locals tend to do

You honestly don't think African's, former eastern block europeans etc. are on less initial wages than British equivalents and or that it's simpler poach from other academies than to invest in and produce our own?

Maybe you're right.
I just fail to see how this helps the premier league in any way

I'm quite concerned about the lad. I haven't seen the vid, but what you have commented on is deeply disturbing it suggests Matth's behaviour is manifesting itself (plus other noticeable behaviour reading back), which is possible with autism, by that i mean a split personality. It could be something with secluding himself in that room. I sort of wished people had directed me to this thread sooner, but hey it's probably easier to access in it's full context.

Matth if you are reading this, you need to go to the doctor's fella if you don't believe Carrick is you.

.
Well said <ok>
Frankly some of the baiting of the lad has been unedifying and you have done the right thing by him

Indeed mate. I think it'll be a good thing.

Well yeah, but that wasn't the point really.

In any case, some clubs do produce good British players and this could encourage more to do the same.

I personally don't have an issue with it.

Good to see he’s at least saying the right things, such as taking himself out of the firing line by stopping with these ridiculous home movies. Whether he sticks to that decision is another matter, highly unlikely imo.
