Match Day Thread General matchday thread.

Nothing will ever get me to understand why you didn't get Conte in for a couple of seasons. No way would you in this state with him in charge.

I really don't think so tbh.

The problems at United go way beyond the manager. Lack of modernisation in terms of the DOF, and Chief Exec who was great at the marketing at the expense of the football itself. This is a widely known.

But reading the posts I think a few ppl aren't really aware of what's been going on behind the scenes in terms of the infrastructure and heirarchy if they think we're going out to spend £80m+ on big names to build another manufactured team of individuals.

The change at the top with Arnold, the new role of Rangnick, and Murtough coming in as DOF, along with the recruitment of Ten Hag as manager suggests there's a definite shift coming in terms of the way we go about actually building a football team, and the club... after the debacle of the past ten years.

There we go a bit of sense. Have a chat with @Diego he's in downward spiral. Needs a hug.

By instilling a structure and getting some players with passion and effort maybe?
Yeah, but that's not been his job at Ajax.
The structure and players were already in place.
Eredivise is a tin pot league anyway. Its like going after the Celtic manager whoever the **** that is <laugh>

I agree...but at least you'd have got top 4.
He has made us fitter and has got a tune out of Doherty, Davies and Dier and got us from 8th to a chance of finishing top 4.
In the short term he'd have been better than this temporary bollocks.

But the long term issues of United are pretty shocking...particularly when it come to the stuff I have read about the state of the ground is really pretty shocking.

Yep, buying players and not "names" <ok>

Earlier in the thread someone said we would have to spend millions to get back on track as if we haven't/don't spend millions.
I just asked if they thought we wouldn't <laugh>

I think recent seasons have shown that getting Top 4 solves nothing. Having Conte would just be a sticking plaster.

We needed a complete reset within the club and everyone coming in to be on the same page.

Whilst an interim manager wasn't ideal, I think putting in the right people at the top and defo setting up a DOF, before bringing in the manager was the right way to go. The new guy then comes in fitting into a long term plan. Bringing in Conte and then building the structure leaves the potential that he wouldn't have suited what the new heirarchy wanted or planned.

As for Top 4 itself, I posted on our board a while ago that I wasn't bothered. I think it could be a blessing in disguise. We have some cracking players in the U23's and without the pressures placed on the manager with CL, I'm really hoping the new guy has the minerals to give 2 or 3 of them a chance as well.

The majority of the ground is not near as bad as some make out, in fact most of it is pretty good. At the moment there are big discussions going on about a major re-furb and enlargement V a new stadium so no "touch up" work is likely to be expansive.
One of the main problems with infrastructure is the training facilities which need a massive upgrade.

Interesting game tonight.

Most of us support clubs where we don't judge our players against the top sides because being realistic we know there's a gap in spending/wages etc.

So where does that leave Man U as they probably spend more per season than Liverpool and are just not competitive at that level ?

It leaves us where it's always left both clubs when the other's been successful. In a cycle.

When you've seen the fortunes of both for the best part of the past 40 years, it's no longer as much of a concern as it was 30 odd years ago. Football runs in cycles and I'm a little more seasoned by it all now. It also helps when you've gone through a significant period of success in your lifetime tbf.

I think their squad is-was excellent
Firstly - I would never call Ronaldo
Easily on of the greatest of all time (hate saying that btw)
I wouldn’t say he was a bad signing but
At the end of last season Utd had just worked out a system that seemed to suit them and they were lethal playing on the break

they had Rashford Greenwood Martial
Pogba Fernandes
Now on paper that’s an excellent group of players

they then go into summer and get Sancho
Cracking signing

their squad at that point with the system they were playing starts to look scary

they also have Varane Cavani amongst others

in Comes ronaldo and it is looking really rosy - Then the **** hits
Multiple injuries
The greenwood situation (no one can underestimate how bad that screwed them over imho - and it was well out of the clubs control - total freak of a situation)
And pressure piles

I don’t think it takes a lot to correct Utd atm
Don’t know enough about the squad to talk detail but
If they sort out a system that suits the players they have
I think if they get a manager in who unites (and ten hag could very well be that guy) they can overcome most of their issues

I don’t know how to sort the top end of the club but Utd are plenty good enough to be back in the top 4 next season imho

In my opinion they just make the wrong decisions when it comes to splashing the cash. Let's be honest they've come 2nd twice in recent times, both won and lost European finals but still can't get close to being a really good side because they spend big but don't spend well.

Put Ben White and Declan Rice (for example) in their squad 12 months ago and we probably aren't having this conversation.

Also they seem scared to death to get rid of good players who for one reason or another are not cutting it with them.
