It was the same with Stoke, West Brom et al, I think the refs refrain from blowing the whistle on a lot of fouls committed by 'physical' teams because they would be blowing it every minute and there would be complaints on MotD because the ref 'didn't let it flow'. It's bullshit, if it's a foul in one match then it's a foul in all, but managers like Pulis & Warnock rely on it.
