Also some game time for Toffolo, Turner, Morris and Andreu -sounds like a good workout for a number of the fringe players. I wonder if Mikey will appear on here tonight slagging us all off ? <whistle>

Sounds as though it was a really good workout for the players. Can anyone go along and watch these games at Colney???

Just think guys, if it wasn't for me we'd probably be top of the league here <laugh>

Is this just optimistic about this season? Or general supporters optimism?

Must be for the season ahead. I'd say in general, Newcastle and Derby would be nowhere near the top.

Ipswich in the bottom 3 and below Burton!? <laugh>

Who do we have in the league cup? Just noticed we arent playing this week until sat where others are playing tonight and tomorrow.

I think PL clubs don't enter the fray until the next round.
Not sure why recent relegation = a bye into round two, though? :emoticon-0112-wonde
Same as these stupid and unfair parachute payments, failure once again reaps it's own rewards.

Did a search & found this on the Newcastle site. It explains what's happening but gives no indication of why we and they get a bye?

League Cup stuff
This week sees 35 Capital One Cup First Round ties played between Tuesday and Thursday, with all the Football League clubs involved except ourselves and Norwich City, who both received byes.

The Magpies and the Canaries enter the competition at the Second Round stage along with the 13 Premier League clubs not in Europe and will play in the week commencing August 22nd.

Confirmation of exactly when the Second Round draw takes place this week is awaited - with some outlets listing it as Thursday evening, when the Bristol Rovers and Cardiff City tie is shown live on Sky Sports.

We'll update you when the draw time is known.

Kind of makes sense if you read this:

The tournament is organised so that 32 clubs remain by the third round. Seventy out of the seventy-two clubs in the English Football League (tiers 2–4) enter in the first round. In the second round, the thirteen Premier League clubs not involved in European competition as well as the two highest ranked Championship clubs from 2015-16 (Newcastle United and Norwich City) enter the cup,[5] with Arsenal, Leicester City, Manchester City, Manchester United, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United all receiving a bye to the third round.[4][6] In the third round the aforementioned clubs involved in European competition enter the competition.

  • Clubs involved in European competition enter at the third round.
  • The remaining Premier League clubs and two highest ranked Championship clubs enter at the second round.
  • The remaining Football League clubs enter at the first round.
