The laissez faire approach to financial management has ruined men's football, it's doing the same thing for women's football.

Nah, I can't be arsed to care anymore.

Let's see, the Premier League is ultra-boring and is simple a case of Man City plus either Chelsea or Man U challenging for the title (depending on which is bombing that season), the rest of the league is basically full of also-rans that have no chance of the title, success is almost entirely determined by money, players are greedy, egotistical mercenaries, fans are ripped off, the system is more and more skewered in favour of the 'big clubs' (e.g. the academy system), a league that gets literally over a billion pounds in TV revenue hoards it for itself with a selfish attitude that pervades modern football as clubs don't give a toss about anyone or anything else, and most of this money ends up in players wages and agent fees anyway, meanwhile clubs in the lower tiers of football are having to mortgage their future just to compete especially when some rich billionaire comes in and many clubs are folding...

But apart from that, football's all hunky-dory

I completely agree with you PL. However, I can't be a hypocrite without realising it. SFC would almost certainly not exist without an owner who decided, for non-financial reasons it is said, that buying the club was worthwhile.

Without all the mega-money the Premier League would be the First Division and it would be more of a common level of play and far more competitive, just like The Championship. Of the elite divisions around the world it is probably the most competitive though. But you are right, everything is completely geared to half a dozen clubs at best, and that's utterly wrong.

Regarding PL's comments, I have just heard Chris Waddle say almost exactly the same. He considers the waste that the Premier League makes as shameful. And it is true.

And the poor showing in the CL rather highlights the weakness outside the PL. Rather like the old Celtic/Rangers monopoly struggling outside of Scotland. One has to wonder where it's going to go. If we get restricted to only 3 clubs in the CL due to poor showings and none of Man U, Man C or Chelsea get past the knock-out rounds in the next few years, will the billionaire owners decide to put their money elsewhere? And then what happens?

Interesting piece of trivia courtesy of the Beeb - "Former Belgian defender Stan van den Buys holds the unwanted record of scoring a hat-trick of own goals as Germinal Ekeren lost 3-2 to Anderlecht in 1995"

Well I'm hoping he's had enough of the top 6 and won't be tempted to return just yet.

Just back from an injury that robbed him of pre-season, this does not excite me at all.

I see FC Midtjylland are three goals up at Club Brugge, not the mugs some seem to think they were?

They obviously play a style that is very hard to play against if you're not used to it. A team in their own league beat them 0-1 away the other week. But against much more high profile foreign teams it's a different story. Guess that moneyball stat analysis does work on the pitch.
