No, not him.

Are you sure he wasn't just a scammer casing the joint?

Toby Jessel MP died five years ago at the age of 84.
FYI ......That Hull North by-election on 27/1/1966 was incredibly important. The strength of the result encouraged Harold Wilson to call a general election for March 1966. Kevin McNamara beat Jessel by 5k votes..I also think Barbara Castle, the then Transport Minister, also promised the people of Hull that they would build a bridge spanning the Humber, if the people voted for a Labour win. And incredibly they did...!!!!

PS...Good luck to Keir Starmer and Labour. The country needs strong leadership in these ****ty times...A bit like Tim Walter at Hull City AFC.
Sadly, I've got a feeling the honeymoon won't last long.

For Walter, Starmer or both?

In spite of my political leanings, I really hope Starmer and Labour do a great job.
Why? Because I dread to think what the UK will be like if we see another 5 years of abject failure.

Having said that, serious question, can any leader or party succeed these days, even with such a massive majority, when we are so deeply divided on so many issues. The divisions exist not only within the UK population but even within parties themselves.
Immigration.
Gender
Climate
Brexit / EU
Religion / Culture / values
Gaza
etc etc.
And the continuing devolution (not just of countries, but now within countries) just makes for more divides.
There have always been differing views of course, but I can't recall the divides being so deep and so many as they are these days.
Is there anyone in this country apart from the very wealthy who can really say they have been better off in the last 13 years? Seriously what have the Tories done to improve the lives of most of us, it’s been record taxes, many thousands of extra food banks, massive rises in interest rates, food prices, energy, sewerage in the water, the list is endless, one positive, anyone?

I went to a British Sikh wedding years ago and most of the whites had to be carried out on stretchers (me included). A bottle of whisky per couple was on the dinner tables, plus wine and beer and that was just for starters - it was ****ing carnage and went on for three days. I was supposed to get on a helicopter on the fourth day to work offshore, but tested over the limit to fly or be on a rig. Fortunately it was back in the day when you just lost a day's work, rather than had a disciplinary and got sacked.
Didn’t someone say that when Muslims order tea in restaurants, tea isn’t what they really get.

I'm not classed as very wealthy, but I can honestly say I'm much better off now then I was 13yrs ago. But I would say that has got very little to do with anything any government has or hasn't done, I realised very early doors that absolutely nobody bar myself is going to make my life better, so I just decided to crack on, work hard, improve myself and keep pushing....I left school with 2 GCSEs a c or above and always thought I was going to be a pro so never bothered with any education. Turns out I wasn't that good haha so had to make something for myself.

No UK government, red, blue or multicoloured is going to really make that much of a difference to your individual life, they only way to really make a change on a personal level for you and your family is to get of your arse and make it happen yourself

The mocktails at the wedding I went to might suggest that drinking alcohol was not entirely absent from their lives either.

Edit: Not sure what happened to your quote there!

Do you know what a mocktail is? It would appear not.

I agree with this entirely, the most sensible post on the entire thread!

Well that’s not true actually. Thanks to Liz Truss’s financial experiments many of us have been utterly clobbered on our mortgages - ours was a 2.5 times increase which we can only afford by using what little capital we have. So most people feel poorer and realise what a load of liars the lot who’ve been booted out were. Nothing sweeter than seeing her ousted.

I'd be very surprised if it were anywhere near the same result come the Scottish Parliament Elections. That said,if Labour can build a strong bond with the electorate and be seen to be getting things done in the next 22 months(and there's much work to do given the state of the ****ing place),it could certainly throw up an interesting result.
