A big moment in Britain's industrial story happened today.
The coke ovens at the Port Talbot steelworks were closed.
This was where they baked the coal used to make millions of tonnes of steel.
What you're looking at here is the last coke ever made in the UK. Pix

Apart from the job losses - shutting down a coke ovens is not a bad idea - the by-products and emissions from the ovens are horrendous

Won't say I'm not concerned about the world but Port Talbot and people working in near the ovens have definitely been susceptible.
I came to Canada in 81 to commission and maintain a state of the art Coke Ovens and saw people in the surrounding area being affected by fan failures ( explained to them as STEAM!!!)and workers in areas where it was more luck than judgement that they weren't seriously hurt. Once saw a smart assed supervisor end up on his ass when he stuck his head in a transmitter box when he had been told it had an ammonia leak which he insisted again was steam!!

Health and Safety must come first and improvements should always be strived for.

My point really was about the UK attempting to be in the vanguard of reducing emissions (with the people and businesses of ‘particularly’ Port Talbot being collateral damage) whilst in reality it will hardly ‘trouble the scorers’ especially given what’s happening in China, India et al.
