Nandy has defended Starmer by saying it was not illegal to eat. No, it wasn't, but that is not the point. In fact, Johnson didn't actually eat any of his cake, but that is also not the point. Johnson attended a gathering at his home address. Starmer was at a gathering in Durham.

It was the gathering outside of regulations that was illegal.

They are both, let's be fair, minor transgressions, but that too, is not the point.

The point is Starmer did exactly the same as Johnson. He knew it, but nevertheless went ahead and used Johnson's transgression to plant a political bomb under No 10 whilst at the same time spinning a web of lies to obscure his own wrongdoing.

Well, he has now been caught out in his lies. His Machiavellian web is undone. He has been, as Mr Shakespeare, would say, hoisted by his own petard.
