“After more than 21 years, the Dutch-British steel marriage has come to an end. An agreement was reached on Thursday about the split of Tata Steel Netherlands and the factories in the United Kingdom. The company announced this on Friday.
Tata Steel Nederland, the former Koninklijke Hoogovens, will become an independent company within the group. These factories previously fell under the umbrella of Tata Steel Europe. The Dutch and British branches will now operate as two independent companies side by side.
The cooperation between the Dutch and the British in the steel industry has not been very happy. This was already the case when the Dutch Hoogovens merged with British Steel to form the Corus group. This company was acquired by Tata Steel in 2007. In recent years there have been many voices from the Netherlands that IJmuiden had to absorb the losses of the British steel factories.
Coordination will continue to take place for a small number of activities, for example for serving joint customers, the company said. The Dutch Executive Board has full responsibility for the activities of Tata Steel Netherlands, under the supervision of the Dutch Supervisory Board.
