    Greed?

Go and educate yourself about addiction before posting ****e like that ffs.

Embarrassing that people can still be so ill informed about such a common place affliction

Mind, do we need reminding every three months or so by the media that Gazza is a plonky? I think most people get the message by now, not sure if we constantly need to be updated.

Indeed. The guy hasn't chosen to be an alcoholic. Some have the 'self will' to fight such afflictions, some don't. I like a drink, I really like a drink. So much so that I took a conscious decision to stop drinking altogether a few years ago. I have a mate that cannot do that and is effectively a functioning alcoholic. His wife and child have just left him over it and still he drinks. He hasn't admitted to himself that he has a problem, yet. But if and when he does he will find it difficult to stop. Maybe even impossible. It is a little like smoking. How many people have you seen with legs lopped off due to the ***s and they are still puffing away. Addiction aint no picnic.

An alcoholic may not choose to be an alcoholic but their immediate family don't choose for them to be like this either and it's the immediate family (and friends) that also suffer as well.

My own views are that it's up to the person ultimately to put themselves right, somehow, or else the cycle continues. People remember Gazza fondly because of his footballing genius and to some degree, his impish antics. However, as some on here have pointed out, there is only certain mileage in that. Not sure where the greed comment fits in though? Maybe there is a certain amount of selfishness in being an addict, although selfishness eventually turns to self-destruction.

Shall I have a gin and tonic or just f**ing glug the whole bottle down neat and then go and buy another one?.
Before addiction takes hold the lack of self control is akin to greed , the same as fat c**ts that can't get out of the house because they have just eaten an entire bargain bucket that is classed by some as a disorder or "illness" yet poor people can barely feed their families.
Gasgoine has zero class and I have no sympathy for the waste of space, also the NHS should not pay for any treatment from his greed . You lot will be up in arms and moping when he bites the bullet and we all know how it will end ,the same as George Best greedy piss head w**kers the pair of them.

Have you ever drank so much you vomit and pass out? Would you call that an illness or greed? Doing something in excess is greedy the physical addiction and dependancy of the alcohol is something that takes time .

I took cocaine in my youth and it is physically addictive as soon as it runs out you crave more and more , after spending half my wages in a weekend once I knocked it on the head, if I chose to keep spending money and sacrifice paying rent bills etc then I would consider that greedy.
The same with gambling people lose their business their house their families and it comes down to greed .
People that blow millions on drugs drink or gambling then play the victim afterwards like it was out of their hands are greedy stupid people.
The people that let these selfish greedy people carry on destroying their lives are enablers and unfortunately saying poor old Gazza has no control over his own destiny and making excuses for him is killing him faster .
Gasgoine pissed away his money in casinos and snorted most of his fortune too, greedy fat useless mess of a man.

You obviously have little knowledge of the problems Gazza has had or when or how they originated. If you care to do a bit of research before pontificating you would find that if Gazza had only suffered one type of "problem" he probably would have been a relatively happy man. Unfortunately he didn't and the problems didn't just start when he was "famous" or "rich", they started well before that.

Again to come on to any board and slag someone off who you don't know or have had any contact with stills shows a lack of class and no compassion.

Maradona would be a good comparison but i don't personally know him so i can't comment.
Tony Adams was probably worse than Gasgoine but he had the balls to stop his destructive lifestyle and now uses his time to help rehabilitate others too.
Just because Gazza is a Geordie it doesn't give you ownership of him and as he represented my country i feel i have the right to pass comment on him.
You don't know about my experiences with addiction and i strongly doubt you know what makes Gazza tick .
The faux outrage at my blunt assesment of the waster is based on the opinion that he is one of your own so will defend him to his death.
Do your minutes silence now as to quote Barny Gumble he is already dead..<peacedove><peacedove>

By the way he used to play in the Connoiseur casino on Kensington high st when i was a dealer and i met him many times, he was a dribbling mess and used to return from the gents with powder all over his bloated face and piss stained jeans.
I am in a better position to comment than you i would imagine.

Look at the ****ing state of that loser.

Had everything I would ever dream for and completely pissed it away. I for one, will not be falling for it and will not give a tosh when he dies.

I was there as well - still get goose bumps thinking about it. I have quite an addictive personality and it strikes me that it can be all too easy to go under - especially if you never have to wirry abput where the money for the next one will come from. I do feel for him but, in all yhe hysteria, do wish the media would remind the nation that there's thousands in Gazza's situation and it needs to be looked at urgently.

He has had crippling depression since before he even retired. His life has not been fun by any stretch of the imagination. He had some good times in the early-mid nineties but he is a psychological wreck that will never be fixed. I thought he'd be dead by now.

Gazza has been battling with depression.

Football would give him the release he needed from it. Training helped subdue his mental issues and the adrenalin of playing top-level football was the only thing stopping him from doing what he is doing now.

Of course it's tragic to see a great player fall down like this - the next stage we are all too familiar with remembering Gary Speed - the difference being that Speed kept things very private and Gazza flails around hoping to be saved, but knows ultimately that there is no escape from depression and drinking/drug use are the escape.

    If only for a while.

My memory of Gazza is when me and my mate were walking down Dean street on the way to quayside for a bevvy on an afternoon. Gazza and 5bellies and entourage were walking up towards us. Gazza faces up to my mate, says " do you know who i am", then takes a drunken swing at my mate and misses, falls over in a heap at his feet. Me and my mate go, "what the **** are doing man". Gazza goes" Im Paul Gasgoine!" Fivebellies picks him up and says "sorry lads, hes pissed". We carry on down the quayside.. Later that afternoon he breaks his kneecap falling off a stool in a bar in town. He was still playing for ****ing England then!! He has been ill for a long long time. I wish him all the best but I fear we will be opening the papers soon to some awful headlines!!:emoticon-0101-sadsm

I wouldn't take my comments so seriously. It was tongue in cheek.

Its a shame what has become of him, but lets face it, he is one many. The focus is greater because of his status but really more needs done in a more general sense to tackle what is a common problem. There is a lot of amateur psychology whenever the subject is raised so I struggle to take it too seriously. He like many others need professional help, but the system is far from able to cure these issues. Our understanding of this kind of thing is limited, as is the resource available to tackle it fully. Of course that is a great shame but the worlds not perfect.
