It's easy in hindsight to judge your former self, when you're in your shoes, at the time and you're living in a personal hell, the mind lets you down more often than not. Imagine how many Muslims for example, are living with being gay, knowing they'll never be able to come out, in a country like Saudi.
That's probably the most extreme example isn't it, somewhere that you can get killed for it. Thank **** it's not like that here. But yeah if that's the high end of the scale in terms if difficult of coming out (as in don't ****ing do it under any circumstances) and it goes down to somewhere like San Francisco which is notoriously liberal and could easily have a gay football team without anyone batting an eyelid, you can see that it's almost always going to be difficult. It just strikes me that the most effective way for it to not be an issue in the future is for there to be prominent players who are out. If the alternative is to wait until society is sufficiently educated so that it doesn't even register as an issue then we could be waiting a long, long time.

Ha not coming out of the closet but I did play in the Gay football league in the UK. Mate from work was gay and he played for the Leeds team and they were short of players so me and another straight lad played for them for about a season and a half. Some amazing laughs and surreal experiences!!! I remember one time being sub and the 2 other subs were not watching the game but instead were discussing the state of the net curtains in a house across the road, funny times!!
