If he's not part of the first team squad then the priority is to work in the interests of the player to relaunch his career. It's the sort of respectful and considerate behaviour that will attract others to the club in the future. It's partly his performance, partly his fitness but mainly that he no longer fits our system. That's not really his fault.
It's not respectful and considerate behaviour- he has a contract. Saints have no choice but to pay him. The negotiations will be around how much.
I think you've misunderstood the point I was making. I was responding to the suggestion that he had to stay with the squad. That is not in his interest or ours really. So by negotiation, I agree we should pay him (off) - assuming that is what he wants to do - and let him resurrect his career. We will lose out financially I guess by paying him anything but it seems more important at this stage to help the guy get his career back on track. Similarly if he wants to stay here and fight for his place then good luck to him. He's entitled to do that because of the contract but not sure its a wise move for the reasons stated - he simply no longer suits our style of play.

According to some fans, the other players were just not good enough to be on his wavelength. He needs to find a team where the players will be where Gaston wants them to be rather than where they actually are.
