Just stunned, Gary Speed was always in a group of players (Giggs / Friedal) that I'd dread to see retire because I'd spent my youth watching these guys grace the Premiership.

Was so glad for him when he turned it round for Wales as in the first couple of games for them and for Sheffield United I always thought he wouldnt be cut out for Management (how wrong was I).

I definitely think we and every other club next weekend should have a minutes silence regardless of who he played for as like the passing of Stanley Matthews etc... its the passing of a Football Legend not just a Club Legend.

Either a minutes silence or a minutes applause tomorrow night please. He played for neither club but was respected by nearly all football supporters as a major part of football these last 20 odd years. It doesn't matter what drove him to do what he did, we should respect what he gave to the sport we will be watching tomorrow night

Let's go for a MINUTE silence. Clapping is so impersonal and does not show proper respect as a time to reflect and think about the person. It also is not an British custom but a foreign one that I can't help but think is designed to drown out idiots talking. Let's show some class and do the silence.

I agree with the call for a minute's silence. It was silence in Halifax (perfectly observed), should be silence tomorrow.

I think there's a difference between the minute's silence and the minute's applause, in that silence is used when the death was tragic, and applause is used to celebrate the achievements of people who died in old age. Maybe I've read too much into it, but if that is the case, then it's definitely cause for silence.

No no, I know the death is tragic and really shouldn't have happened, but I think he should be applauded, like at the swansea game, started with a minutes silence that turned into applause. He was a record holder for premier league appearances, Wales Legend but simply a British Football one, should be celebrated in the way that others with great achievements have been.

I want to do a one minute silence, he deserves it, the one minute applause is when you think hooligans will chant over a silence, I think a silence tonight will be respected, that's just my view no offence.

    So so sad, RIP Gary

The problem with suicide is that it rips the heart out of the people left behind; they keep asking if there was anything they could have done, they want to know why the person who committed suicide didn't want to talk about his/her problems, they want to know why the person wanted to die rather than stay around with them?

About five years ago I knew three people who committed suicide in a period of 14 months, my cousin, a business partner's girlfriend and a business partner. I became a mentor with my former business partner's eldest son, he was devastated and couldn't work out what he had done wrong that his dad wanted to go away? After years of far too much drinking and getting into trouble he is now putting his life back together, starting his own business and getting married. It takes a lot of strength and time for a family to recover from something like this so let's hope that the British press give Gary's family the time they need to grieve.

Sleep well Gary, you are at peace now.

    RIP Gary Speed.

The club have announced a minutes applause which I think is the right thing, best to honour him. Shame I will not be there to pay my respects.

I prefer a minutes silence, gives you time to reflect upon the person in question. Agree that clapping is somewhat impersonal.

Think silence or applause can both be very atmospheric and appropriate for a great ex-player, am glad that we're having one. Either way, RIP Gary Speed.

I completely agree with this AllHell.

Gary Speed was a tremendous player and a model professional. He was loved by every fan of each club he played for. There's not many players who could boast such a thing.

However, Imo suicide is a cowards way out. The scars it leaves etched deep on the hearts of those you hold dearest never fully heal.

I have no doubt in the coming weeks/months the reasons behind his decision to take his life will come out.

Whatever they may be I very much doubt I'll change my mind on suicide being a cowards way out!!

RIP Gary Speed, I hope your family manage to find some semblance of peace and understanding.

I don't think AHLL is implying it is a cowards way out, and I have to disagree.

For someone to be that desperate to finish it all and to actually do it is in many ways the opposite of cowardice.

Naturally the pain is left with the relatives like AHLL says; I'd agree it's selfish but not Cowardly.

At the moment one can't really comment on what's gone on - as Franco says we will find out soon enough.

It seems only a matter of time before the tabloids dig up scandal though I'd be suprised.

It may even be something as harmless as he slipped whilst getting the Christmas decs down, who knows...

Either way I'm glad he is at peace.

Franco, when someone is suffering from depression, they will often believe that others don't care - so much so that they believe they're a nuisance to other people, and others won't really care one way or the other what they do.

It's a very dark place, and very hard to judge anyone in that position.

I don't know anything about his personal life, so I'm just talking in general.

Fair play lads... I'm always prepared to hold my hands up when I may have overstepped the mark or jumped the gun somewhat. My complete ignorance of mental illness is probably a contributing factor.

However, we're all assuming that he suffered from some sort of mental issue. Surely not everyone who commits suicide is suffering from mental illness? Maybe I’m talking b******s. I just can’t envisage a situation that would make life seem so bad that I wated to take my own life and destroy the lives of those closest to me.

Whatever it was will come out, so we shall see.
