Rory Gaffney has had to bide his time this season, but when given the opportunity he has grabbed it with both hands.

The Irishman's record of four league goals in nine league matches may not looking overly spectacular but when you break it down, there is a convincing argument that Gaffney has been the most ruthless striker in League One this season.

Gaffney got his third league start of the season against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday and wasted no time in making a compelling case for his regular inclusion in the starting 11.

His goal against the Pilgrims showed the improvement he has made this season. Always a physical presence in attack, and often adept at bringing others into the game, Gaffney has markedly improved his finishing this season.

The well taken strike against Argyle was Gaffney's fourth league goal of the season and brings his goals to minutes record to a table topping 88 minutes per goal.

League One top strikers by minutes per goal (minimum four goals)

    1) Rory Gaffney (Bristol Rovers) 4 goals in 353 minutes (88 mins per goal)

    2) Eoin Doyle (Oldham) 6 goals in 539 minutes (90 mins per goal)

    3) Steffan Payne (Shrewsbury) 5 goals in 471 minutes (94 mins per goal)

While other strikers in League One may have netted more often, Gaffney tops the list for making the most of his time on the pitch.

It's also worth noting that Gaffney's four goals have come from just seven shots (five on target). Once again showing his ruthless streak in front of goal given the relative paucity of chances he's had compared to other third tier sharp shooters.

He should of been a regular in the team since the day we bought him, I've always rated him since then.

Love Gaffers, always looks like an honest footballer to me that gives the team 100% effort even if the chips are down, watched him have a great game for us over at Dagenham a couple of seasons ago and have rated him ever since.

I would certainly agree that Gaffney's finishing is so much better this season. Last season he lacked composure and often made the wrong decisions in front of goal.

So have we finally found the right partnership? Harrison and Gaffers. Surely they should be starting all the time from now on.

Nichols will probably slot in well if Bodin's injured.

Did they sub Harrison because Northampton couldn't afford another Match ball
