I'll be a dissenting voice on Obertan. He has excellent pedigree and was highly sought after when leaving Bordeaux. He picked up a series of niggling injuries I believed and never really got close to threatening Giggs and Nani. Hardly surprising given they were two of the players of the season. impossible to judge from his time at Man U based on 14 apps over two seasons. The concern would be why has he struggled to make many appearances. One must be the injuries that Ferguson talked of, but the other may be the promise shown in France has not developed into more. Strange that Man U haven't sold him though. Wouldn't be my first choice right sider should Barton go but beggars can't be choosers.

    heres another:

    http://www.fcgb.net/0-girondins/0-g...89-anciens-obertan-va-quitter-manchester.html

    Translated:

The Manchester United striker, Gabriel Obertan, should leave the Red Devils in the coming hours to join Newcastle.

Under contract until 2013 with Manchester United, Gabriel Obertan failed to find a place since his arrival in 2009 (14 Premier League games). According to RMC , the two clubs would agree on the transfer amount and the player should be committed for five years before the end of the week. There is talk of a severance payment of € 4 million.

But remember, leaving Bordeaux for MU, Gabriel Obertan had a right to resale of up to 50%. In this operation, Bordeaux should receive about € 2 million.

From Manure fans on Smudgers article:

"He is a winger with lots of pace and skills on the ball. Pretty decent shot too.His biggest problem is he has no confidence in his ability and looks lost most of the time he's on the pitch.

Might just not be able to cope with playing for United. Same thing happened with Tim Howard, that turned out alright for Everton. "

    and

"He is probably the best dribbler we have, maybe even the most skillful on the ball. But he just needs to do the basics right. I remember the Cup game against Southampton last season. Was pretty awful floating about the pitch, 2nd half, told to stick to the right hand side and be a winger and got the assist for Owen's goal. "

Aparrently Obertan wasn't in the squad at Schols' testimonial tonight, so could be some truth in the rumours?
