it looks like the trick might be to have a long term manager like moyes so you only lose one or two a season and they never have an excuse to leave en masse because the manager pissed off.
Problem with Moyes, in hindsight, is he never really looked in danger of winning anything. So never got too successful that teams above poached him (until recently), and never failed badly enough to get sacked. But left Everton treading water a bit - again, in hindsight, as we can now see how much more dynamic they can be under a new manager.
