Apparently Private Pile doesn't shoot the drill Sergeant and it's just in his imagination. Kubrick's films are never quite what they seem when you get into the analysis, the guy was a genius. Great film.
I've read an interesting view on The Shining which was convincing when you look at the evidence and completely different to my take on it which was pretty much figuring it out at face value.

The drill sergeant is probably the best character. Some cracking lines from him. GET THE **** OFF MY OBSTACLE
I like the second half of the film but yeah the half with the drill sergeant is solid gold.

The first part of the film was shot at Bassingbourn Barracks in Cambridgeshire and was the depot of the Queens Division. When I was attached to 1 Royal Anglian I knew a few of the lads who were extras in the film.
try typing in Russian war movies on you tube the subtitle ones some of the best action scenes ever made or try Flint a rambo type movie but better acting
I watched jacobs ladder 2 or 3 times still never worked it out.
Corps of Royal Engineers did phase 1 training there, we got tasked to remove the indoor assault course from the gym there, was a mare, fcuking sprogs everywhere.
When I was in ploce we were split into alternate day and night shifts, the Royal Anglian boxing team were out running around the dock complex early one morning, one of our guys ran down the heavyweight champion in a land rover, luckily nobody was hurt, not the best person to run over.
Never been into war films myself but I watched a brilliant documentary about the Falklands War the other day, very moving.

A Bridge Too Far is on today on Channel 5. What a heart-breaking yet superb film with a stellar cast.
I can honestly say that the four years I spent with 1 Royal Anglian were the best four years of my army career. The worst was definitely with the RLC in Abingdon.
You want a real hero try Audie murphy the actor, christ he made Rambo look like Charles hawtrie ! got shot twice in the 2nd world war but took a German infantry on single handed.
There are plenty of real heroes from WW2 and every other war since the beginning of time. Murphy just happened to be the most decorated on the American side during that conflict. Not that I’m taking anything away from him. Obviously a very brave man and deserving of every accolade he got. The Americans always make the most of any opportunity though and as a result Murphy’s wartime heroics were made into a film in which he played the lead. Had Murphy died during the war no one would be talking about him now.
But so was my great grandad in WW1. He was recommended for a VC due to his brave actions but was awarded the DCM instead. He was also mentioned in dispatches on at least two occasions, joined as a private, rose through the ranks and was commissioned, which he resigned the day after, killed four Germans single handedly on one occasion and whilst wounded set up and ran a first aid station. Yet no-one has made a film about Joe Walker the miner from Ryhope and outside of his family nobody knows about him.
Talvisota is a great war movie if you're after something a little different. The Finnish winter war of 1939/40, massively outnumbered but fought back the Ruskies.....inventing & mass producing the Molotov cocktail.

There was a documentary a few years ago presented by Jeremy Clarkson about people who had won the Victoria Cross. This individual was appointed this in Operation Market Garden. I believe, if memory serves me correct that he took out to Panther tanks, whilst loading a PIAT by himself and then took 20/30 German prisoner. The story is utterly remarkable, but the last few sentences still send a shiver down my spine (I won't spoil it).
