The owners do have to realise that they need to spend money if they want Champions League football.

I thought Rodgers had full control but it appears FSG are now overuling his decisions. I do admire FSG in that we have a strategy over bringing in young players but this has really cost us.

Its nice to have a strategy but that strategy needs to have some flexibility! Going off what Rodgers said on the Beeb he wanted to add some experience to the squad to compliment the youngsters. I was shot down for suggesting we needed some experience on here the other day but it seems thats what Rodgers wanted too! Its ok having experience at the back but you also need some level of maturity throughout the rest of the team, perhaps this is another reason Gerrard continues to be picked despite his form? Sterling, Suarez, Borini, Allen, Sahin is very young for an attacking side and puts a lot of pressure on them when they need to learn the game!

No. I think they are in it for the long run, the club was in a bad way when they took over and I think they are within their rights not to overspend in the transfer market after Kenny wasted a lot of their money. Im not suprised some poeple want them out already with the way football fans are today but im still behind them.

well...... i don't see any strategy to genuinely WIN which is central to every statement they make.

I see a strategy to spend about the same as randy leherner at villa.

I can see the amount they wrote off in the annual reports over stadium but if they'd be honest and say wirting that off cost the chance to invest any more then fine. but they are talking about a different story which doesn't add up.

What the owners want is long term value, and thats exactly what they've got in the signings made by Brendan Rodgers. I made this point before on another thread, that Assaidi, Allen and Borini earn less than Aquilani did. Aquilani was a dead-weight, he contributed absolutely nothing, and was as suited to the PL as Joey Barton is to La Liga.

The club is taking a new approach and long-term vision under Brendan Rodgers, he's signing what the owners want, young technical players that not only fit into a system, but improve that system. I believe from now on, we'll see more Nuri Sahin's than Charlie Adam's. It may take time to bear fruit, but the future of the club will be based on a spine of Andre Wisdom, Suso and Adam Morgan. All three have things in common, they are very good players, and they are young, and they can and will improve.

Some people want it now, but there was a mess that needed to be cleared up and the owners have said that the club is far healthier than it was when they first arrived, and they have also admitted, when they first arrived they were somewhat naive. However the worrying thing is that Brendan Rodgers may want to bring Michael Owen back. Liverpool need Owen like they need Hicks and Gillett, Owen is just as despised amongst Liverpool fans as Hicks and Gillett. If there was a free transfer brought in, I would personally love it to be Didier Drogba.

Yes he's a moaning git, but he's in one word..dangerous. He would be perfect to lead our attack.

Nothing would change unless we were bought by some Sheik billionaire or Russian oil barron with more money than sense. As thats not going to happen we are going to have to live within our means, whoever owns the club. And I think FSG have done a good job of making sure we do that this year after correcting last years mistakes. Effectively we are starting from scratch after clearing out the rubbish that was bought in the last 2 years. For me there have only been 2 mistakes this year. Signing Borini, who isn't good enough and loaning out Carroll who it was clear from the start Rodgers didn't rate. Both of these mistakes are down to the manager not the owners.

But none of it is their fault! It's just that those they CHOSE to appoint have badly let them down! Oh yeah and their 'naivety' bless em', their silence over the Suarez affair was deafening and basically they left others out to dry. They can claim 'naivety' all they like but sitting in the USA 99% of the year is sure not going to help them to fully learn the intricacies and expectations of the fans and media. You can have consultants for everything but the full picture can only emerge from personal experience. Considering the debacle of some of their decisions one can only wonder if one of their advisors is Sir Alex!

I don't think they'll sell up for one simple reason. They are still increasing the commercial revenue of the club. While they can keep doing that they'll stay. The fact that they can keep doing it inspite of poor performance on the pitch means they'll stay because they know they can still keep money rolling in whilst not having to invest anything at all into stadium or players. Only once those revenue streams start to plateau will they either invest properly in the squad (hahahaha) or sell up.

While I agree with the two you've listed I'd say having a transfer budget of only 20 mill (incl wages) was a mistake, not telling Rodgers what his actual budget was was a mistake, having a sell to buy policy was a mistake (at least if you're going to do that then make sure you buy first to ensure you don't lack cover) and bidding £3 mill for Dempsey was a mistake (let's not forget Utd paid £4 mill for a kid from Crewe).

And just for the record let's not re-write history here. The rubbish that Kenny bought had us 3 points off Chelsea in 4th place before Suarez/Kenny got shafted by The Fergie Association (and their own employers) and got us to not 1 but 2 cup finals. That was without Lucas, Agger for two months, Gerrard for long periods and Suarez for 9 games.

Superb post and agree with it! Just a small part that admittedly I had thought the same but realised I was wrong is in bringing in players before you sell. You cannot reasonably have a 'sell to buy' policy and then buy before you sell, not saying I agree with the policy because I don't but if you have the policy and then fail to sell the desired players then its another failure. What they should have reasonably done was sanction the buying and stumped up IF by any chance the player didn't leave. Rodgers definately wanted rid of Carrol so there was little risk in this instance, rather than for example Agger who you could use if the deal conveniently fell through. Quite honestly their whole frugal policy is a disaster and fails to take into account the consequences of not investing in key areas.

20 million net spend is a very healthy budget. Who spent more than us? Man City and Chelsea. Do you honestly think we can spend as much as them? Strange, surely they would like to expand your clubs American market. The acquisition of a talisman of the US national side would have been a good direction to go in with regards to achieving this.

I agree that the Directors should not be involved in the footballing matters. Transfers are down to the Manager and his staff.

But surely we had alternatives to Dempsey? The board weren't willing to part too much cash on a 29 year old, so surely BR was aware of this and must have moved onto other targets?

Furthermore, prior to the Deadline Day Debacle, we did some very good business. We brought in Sahin and Allen who are likely to be regulars in our midfield, a young and hungry striker in Borini (who needs to be playing in the centre!), a fast tricky winger in Assaidi and a promising prospect in Yesil. As a result, we have now shifted last season's starters such as Downing, Henderson and Shelvey to the bench therefore improving our depth.

We then got rid of a lot of deadwood which wasn't need, thus saving £500k a week in wages = £26m a year which we'll see the benefit next season (hopefully).

I doubt FSG would have got involved much, from the sounds of it Ian Ayre was doing the negotiating. Ok they appointed him so you could blame them, but to be fair they've made it clear publicly and I expect to Rodgers when they appointed him that we are not going to pay large fee's and wages for older players. Which I believe is a sensible policy. So therefore if Rodgers comes along and says I want to pay £7 million for a player who is nearly 30, sign him up on a long term deal and convert him from an attacking midfielder to a striker, they are well within their rights to say no.
