Sunderland arrange friendly against League Two side during international break
Sunderland will face League Two side Carlisle United in a friendly during the international break.
The Cumbrians are set to travel to the Academy of Light on Monday, September 2 for a behind closed doors fixture.
United boss Steven Pressley confirmed the clash would take place as he looks to hand game time to a number of fringe players.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Pressley said: “We’re playing a bounce game at Sunderland on Monday, which is something that I think quite a lot of the players require.
“That’ll give us a chance to get some game time for those who haven’t played regularly.”
It is likely that Sunderland will also use the friendly as a chance to hand opportunities to players whose game time has been limited in recent weeks – including new signing Joel Lynch, who hasn’t featured yet this season.
Further detail in the Echo:
Jack Ross talking about Joel Lynch:
“He did a little bit at the start of pre-season with Sheffield United, then he’s been training on his own,” Ross said.
“He’s a little behind. “He’ll do almost a mini pre-season in between doing little bits of training with me."
“I would expect him after the international break to be at the point where you’re saying, ‘right, that’s him up to speed’.
“A couple of weeks work and that should be him ready to go.
“We’ve got one game scheduled for behind closed doors next week already, and we may get another one in as well,” Ross added.
“That will help not just him but a couple of others who need ticking over as well.”
Having postponed the clash with Burton Albion next Saturday due to international call-ups, the Black Cats are not in action again until they travel to Accrington Stanley on September 14th.
