Still don't think that our goal differential is a concern; if we finish level on points with West Ham, it's difficult to imagine that they'll produce a margin of +9 over that span and finish above us in goals scored on the year. Win tomorrow and all that will have happened today is the elimination of another round of games.

It's not the result here that's worrying (we all know Barnsley weren't going to win this) - more that all West Ham's players are getting on the scoresheet (even Maynard) which is going to give them all some confidence, on top of the team confidence of two wins in a row now.

Lose tomorrow, and we then face an upcoming Reading game that if we lose that too (depending on Palace result), could see West Ham make up all that lost ground, but with them in confident form, and us potentially on a dip. However, that is worst case scenario. I always fear the worst when we're coming off the back of a loss, especially a trouncing like we got at Blackpool.

If we perform tomorrow we'll be fine, if we don't, then we are in trouble. Three point advantage looks very small this evening.

Which is why I said "potentially" on a dip, which, if you follow the rest of my scenario, also includes a loss at Portsmouth, unknown at Palace, and a loss at Reading.

    For ****'s sake.

On what basis do you think that's going to happen???

Other than pointless defeatism, that is.

Agreed. I'd fully prepared myself for both of them winning tonight. Win tomorrow, and it will have a been a good weekend for us (so far, considering Monday will still be to come). Six point gap will still be intact, and they'll be one less game for WH to catch up. Our 12 points target would have been reduced to 9 points. 9 points from 5 games.

Despite destroying Barnsley today, if we win tomorrow then automatic promotion moves ever further away from WH's reach.

Jesus H christ, if anyone has a doubt or isn't fully on board with the premature promotion party, people start jumping on their backs. Give it a rest, we are not nailed on, we have some work to do, just because we are not taking it for granted does not make us negative. I hope you get to say 'I told you so' , I really do, but get off the 'nervous saints' backs in the meantime, because it is starting to grate.

Hello..? What's the matter now..? Dear, oh dear HR, why do you do this..? Bringing forward disaster before there's even the chance of it happening, doesn't help you or anybody else, at all. ;)

Now you know how the ednless pessimism feels for the rest of us.

At least we have justification for feeling confident.

The whole point of my post is that IF we don't win tomorrow (which as a derby game is not impossible), we then have a Reading game in a few games' time that we could quite easily also lose, seeing that they are a very good team indeed. Depending on how a Portsmouth loss would affect us, the Palace game would also be very important. So my "worst case" there would mean Southampton would be pointless, you would still be completely pointless, and West Ham could have made up their lost ground, and a tight run-in would be in store.

A scary thought. So it is not defeatism, rather conjecture and airing a possible, and hopefully very unlikely, "what if". Stating as fact that we were going to lose those games would be defeatism.

I am not a negative poster, but I am pro-negative posters' rights, and anti-the ffs brigade, of which you seem to be one.

If we lost games all the time, you might have a point.

I think they use a search function to trawl this forum for words such as "if" and "lose", and just get straight in there!

I think we're going up, but I certainly won't take that for granted until its signed, sealed, and delivered. I'm nervously positive.

On the plus side, that awful tackle by the Leeds player injured Jem Karacan. Barnsley really were **** though.
