Whilst he;s never coached in Spain it's a possibility, and he may also speak Italian from his time at Inter.
Most Portugese would have a good basic understanding of Spanish, at least. The structure of the Latin based languages usually makes it relatively easy for somebody from one of them to understand the language of another.
...or, to put it another way, if you're Spanish and paralytic, you sound like you're speaking Portuguese.
