That's more like it. My memories of Eric Martin was that he was a pretty sound keeper and Saints were generally better when he was in goal. Served a long time too, but missed out on the FA Cup success by one season. Didn't quite realise he was that good, but then again, he played in an era of fewer goals scored [which resulted in the 3 points for a win, from the old 2, change]

I liked Eric Martin but I'm amazed at the stats. My recollection is that we always scored goals but that we conceded loads too. Obviously not.

Of course this whole debate is not perfect as so much depends on the team playing in front of the goalkeeper. I guess the only true stat would be the goals to shots ratio.

I wondered about that. But thinking about it, it might have been possible. There were several 7th place finishes during Eric's time, in a 42 game season [still miss those] and I remember that he was out with injuries on several occasions, over the years, and Saints have never had the best of second keepers.

Truth is, I'm willing to accept it as I can't be bothered to check. :)
