    I thought that is was pretty self-explanatory. Unless you're Jonathan Pearce, which thankfully none of us are. Hardly a **** system.

    It will always be a computer generated image unless you want a system with embedded cameras in the posts and bar. Such a system actually exists and is cheaper than Goal Control, the rip-off of Hawk-Eye, which is being used in this World Cup. However, Hawk-eye uses synchronised cameras and triangulation to obtain a millimetre accuracy reading. Goal Control does the same. It's German, therefore it was chosen by FIFA.

    Oooh, did I show a bit of football fan bigotry there..? :)

    Hawk eye type systems are extremely accurate when tracking a ball. People aren't convinced it's quite as accurate when predicting where a ball would have gone (mainly for lbw decisions in cricket) but that's not an issue in football. Basically there's a bunch of precisely-placed cameras around the ground (8?) that all track the ball. A computer then takes the tracking info from each camera and puts together a 3D image of exactly where the ball was.
