If they implement a league wide salary cap not based on turnover we'll struggle
We wouldn't struggle if we had owners who could energise the club and motivate the players and supporters.
"Yes you can earn the same at Fleetwood but this is Sunderland where you can have 40,000 people cheer your goal, go up to the Championship and bring your family to an incredible stadium."

We'll not be sold unless someone offers Donald what he wants (which is too much). I heard before (and posted as much) that Donald thinks Covid is a positive for him but didn't know why. Now I do. This statement, he wants us to renew season cards and, in return, we get a stream. Some won't renew but many, especially on direct debit, will.
How many other clubs will have this? Hell, some only get their small attendances bolstered by fans of bigger clubs (Blackburn fans often watch Accrington if they're away, they likely won't pay for a stream). Some clubs won't ask people to renew for a stream.
So we get massive money compared to most, even more than previously. Donald thinks this is where they can attract the players to get us up, and then he can get the money he wants. Now, I'm not totally against it, if it means promotion and a sale I'll take it , but it's on the back of our support, we're basically yet again giving him an opportunity to make a fortune after absolute failure. My other concern with it is that, because he thinks we're big enough to come out stronger than the others, he won't look to sell, we could have decent people now with a plan rather than someone hoping his **** recruitment team finally gets it right. If they do, no harm done I suppose. If they don't we've missed another opportunity.

It could, but realistically they'd have to give a grace period. I mean we'll be well over it, they couldn't very well tell us that we have to sell half of our team with 3 months notice! Could they realistically penalise us for honouring existing contracts? I still think that we'd challenge a wage cap. They already have SCMP to limit wage against turnover, which is a fair way of ensuring that clubs remain solvent, and introducing this wouldn't be fair given our higher turnover. Certainly can't see it in, agreed and fully operational for next season

If they somehow got the approval of a salary cap for next season you can look at it 2 ways: -
1. We recruit players to suit the cap and pray we can muster a promotion charge, then realistically change most of the team on promotion
2. We recruit players with the financial incentive of win promotion and earn championship money, so 2 year contracts with the promotion wage increase written in the contract so any new player can see that they may only earn x for 1 season but are then going to be on y. That should allow us to get a better standard of player in and as we all know, money talks in football.
Option 2 is the biggest risk but at least would show a determination and plan to get out of league 1
They already have one of those in effect, I'd guess they want something firmer.
You would think it would be a blatantly obvious thing to offer like. Particularly to the players who should be able to make the step up.
There’s no way legally that they can bring in a salary cap without at least a two year grace period.

A salary cap would see us lose our young prospects quicker.

So sd now saying there’s two interested party’s both with football men involved so I guess that’s fpp ruled out?
Its a bit of a nothing story tbh. It says two interested parties have had a chat, but there's no preferred bidder, no due diligence and they haven't agreed heads of terms. Doesn't suggest anything substantial, there were groups interested just before Covid as well, I'm guessing there's always been groups sniffing around

Season card renewal time?
Well, the fact its in the echo who the club just granted their Q&A thing to a few weeks ago (the first time they've had a look in since previously they'd have gone to Roker Report) has me suspicious, could be a bit of a "remember we did that with you, can you put this story out now" kind of a thing. But I also think it might just be the echo filling dead time until the league one vote next week. If they wanted to put out a story to increase season card sales I'd like to think even the echo would be able to sex it up a bit! Couple of unnamed groups have had an initial chat with Donald doesn't really get me grabbing for my wallet!!
