The quality of Nicky Maynard is undoubtable- As it stands he is the one player who has the proven ability to create a goal out of nothing, and has shown by his goal scoring achievement, he is also a fox in the box- ( hope that phrase does not come back to bite me ). So why would we sell our greatest asset.... Apologies to David James who I think is a wonderful ambassador for the club. Is it worth £5m to limit our ambition for a top 6 finish- and not just for the coming season, and settle for a mid-table or even lower, because that is the statement of intent that is being made if we were to lose Nicky.
I don't buy this prem clubs will come in when an offer is accepted - We all know he will go to a prem club if asked, no one is asking - In fact we are the only club chasing him and that makes me think we've just built him up too much with our Maynard coloured specs on. I also think that Maynard has no intention of signing for us or signing a new contract with BC - He is running his contract to get a wad of money next summer
Five million. Wow Leicester are even stupider then I thought. He is a good striker but come on five million, that is massively over priced.
I feel this whole maynard thing is becoming disruptive, If we were to accept a new bid im stating to think it would be of a benefit, we have pitman and stead and with 5 million we could sign another up and comer and maybe sort out the back which is a worry.
mike..."leicester even more stupid than i thought"burgess, how is your multi million business going ?
I hope you get stuck with him and maybe we will get him for free next year in the prem unless we find someone else of course
If these rumours that we are back in for the Yak are true then i think our interest in Maynard might cool. Yakubu is our number 1 target and as good as Maynard is Yak is better, he is proven prem class, plus he already knows our club so who knows. I think this could be a ploy by Sven to try and get Maynard to make his mind up quicker. The only problem for us is if the Yak has reduced his wages demands. We will try and get Maynard in January if he doesnt sign a new contract when we can get him for around 2M
I dont mean to be rude, but you know sod all!! You were only saying that Maynard was your number 1 target! Is every player your signing your number 1 target? IF and a big IF, City sell Maynard to me it proves that we are lacking ambition. Maynard in my opinion (and i am entitled to one) is the best striker in the CC. And people are saying £5 million is to much? How much did Andy Carol sell for? £35 million wasnt it....... And as for the money, City are in an unusually strong position, the person injecting money into the club is a City fan and fortunately he is worth in excess of £250 million. Why doesnt he wanna spend? He is spending millions on a new stadium, he is looking long term, where as your new owners just want a bit of publicity and have clearly proven that by renaming your ground. I for one, really hope you dont get promotion, but if you do, it wont be due to team work, it will be down to individuals doing great things to make themselves look better to earn more money for the next bunch of mugs wanting to buy them. These are the sort of players i would not like at our club. Rant over!!
£5m or nothing. Its a massive difference. £5m is half a new first team if we are shrewd. Its not just nothing either, we are also seeing a £2.25m investment walk away. Its all well and good talking about our ambition but can we really afford to see all that investment and potential profit in to the next number 10 walk away for nothing. Maynard wants premiership football, and I think he will get it, if someone like Bolton, Newcastle or Swansea swoop now all well and good, or if he see's out his last year someone will snap him up for free, the same as Bothroyde was. Bristol City are in a losing situation unless the bizzare happens, by which I mean we romp our way to promising looking promotion spot come Christmas he may resign, but outside that why would he? Nicky knows what he wants, and he appears to know that signing with us will weaken his position in every respect, which it will. Bravado aside £5m in cash is a fair deal for all concerned baring in mind he is worth nothing in 9 months. I am begining to think City should deal while they still have time to spend the windfall. Landsown is clearly not throwing his personal wealth around this summer, Pitman and Stead have goals in them, we could buy three top end players that will change the whole side. Are we hanging out for more cash? or do the board and manager know something we dont about Nicky's desire to stay? This rant could be totally superseaded if we have a gentlemans agreement or a promise from the boy that he will sign after the transfer deadline if there is not a Prem offer.
There is no way on this earth that City/Lansdown will allow Maynard to walk away for free. Bristol City are not a Charity, something will happen thats for sure. I just wish it would happen sooner rather than later. Put myself in Nicky's shoes....... I would sign an extension, get back to 100% fitness, make a huge impact on the CC, then wait for a big prem club to come in for me. Signing for Leicester would be pointless, he will not gain anything there. Fact
There is a part of me that thinks that Maynard could be waiting to see what Millen does in regards to transfer activity. We've bought another striker, but we're still desperately in need of a new defence and the midfielder Millen said he wanted last season. Millen has also said that we need to get rid of players before we can sell, yet we're slow on that too. We struggled last year, and if we don't boost our squad with proven talent we'll be in a relegation battle again this year. In an ideal world Lansdown would open his cheque book, let Millen build his squad and tell each player that those that don't perform will be gone in January. Hopefully once the season starts we can invest heavily when the 25 man squads are chosen. Personally, I'd like Ravel Morrison from Man Utd.
Yakubu was our number 1 target but when that move went cold we made Maynard our number 1 target, now there is rumours we are going back in for Yak so i dont know where that leaves Maynard
Hypothetical question: Would you swap Nicky Maynard for Matt Mills? Leicester value both players at around 5 million, and we badly need a top draw centre-back.
None of us rate Maynard at 5m. We're just desperate for a 20 goal Championship striker. He only has a year on his contract and he only played 13 games last season. We're being pushed about over price now everyone knows we're loaded.
After your number one target says he isn't sure about dropping down a level then your targets change..
I stand by the obvious point that is Why would Maynard resign with us? All it does is weaken his position. He will start for us if we dont sell him and will have the luxury of seeing how the season plays out before deciding where he wants to play in 2012/13. He will get more choice of clubs and a better wage deal if he is a free transfer. City will never take the option to stay off the table. The more I think of it he would be mad to sign a contract now. All he would get is one years inflated wage and his chances of the Premiership blocked for another 3 years, unless the BCFC can get up. The idea that he will extend because he thinks he owes the club something seems pretty forign to your modern footballer.
Im confused, your saying he would be mad to re-sign, but lets be honest, why would he sign for Leicester? What can they offer that we cant. Yes they have bought players in, and yes they maybe favourites for promotion, but i believe that we were one of the favourites when Coppell was manager for us and looked what happened. These players are only signing for money and its been proven that money does not buy success. You only have to look at Chelsea and Man City. Lets look at the only facts that we know: Pros: Leicester have a new chairman obviously willing to inject a lot of money for quick success Leicester have a very good manager, with not a bad track record They have a decent stadium They are strong favourites for promotion Cons: I have been to Leicester and the place is an total s**t hole The players at the club are money grabbers and are not there for the love of the club Favourites to get promoted, very often fall flat on their faces What happens if they do not get promoted in 2 years, will Sven and the money still be there? Bristol City Pros: Nicky knows he will be the main man, and the team will be built around him Brand new stadium being built Very established club with the guarentee of money coming in for a very long time in the future Really nice place to live, with a lot of trendy bars, night clubs etc with very little trouble Lots of affluent areas to live Not favourites for promotion - No pressure to perform I could continue....... Bristol City Cons 1 or 2 bad areas of Bristol Current ground in quite a bad state Not a huge fan base Have been associated with Bristol Rovers As you can see, thats the only real facts that we know, everything else is just hear say. I know what i would do if i was Nicky. Lericester really can not offer anything more than City FACT!!!
Modern day footballers dont care about the city, club etc. Most just want to know who will offer more money to them and often the clubs who offers more gets their man. If Maynard didnt want to sign for us we would of given up a long time ago, Sven and Maynards agent will have been in touch. We made an offer for him last week which your chairman hasnt accepted or rejected, so i think if Maynard turns around and says he has to stay and will sign a new deal then our offer will be rejected but if he says he wants to go then he will accept the offer. Maynard is the key in this he picks what happens not the clubs. He is taking a long time and needs to get a move on one way or another. He has had nearly 2 months to decide weather he wants to sign for us or stay at Bristol
And you know all this because you read whats happening in the local paper? The fact is like i said..... Noone knows whats been offered, if anything, its all hear say!
