MONTREAL — A 38-year-old track worker at the Canadian Grand Prix is in critical condition at Sacré-Coeur Hospital after he was accidentally run over by a mobile crane near the end of the race Sunday. The worker, a 10-year veteran of the crane-loading team at the race, was one of two men who was escorting the crane that was carrying a Sauber car that had just hit the wall in Turn 2. The Sauber car was being transported to a garage. At one point the worker tripped in the path of the mobile crane, but the operator of the crane didn’t seem him and continued driving, said François Dumontier, president and CEO of Octane Management and president of the Canadian Grand Prix. A doctor who happened to be nearby ran to the scene within 30 seconds. The man was conscious at first, but his condition deteriorated quickly, said Dr. Jacques Bouchard, chief medical officer of the Canadian Grand Prix. The man was rushed by ambulance to the medical centre at the raceway, where he was stabilized by a team of doctors and nurses. He was given oxygen and was able to breathe. The man was then transported by helicopter to Sacré-Coeur, a designated trauma centre, where a team of specialists was already in place waiting for him. “A giant wheel went over his body, so there are fractures,” Bouchard explained. “That’s what we know for now. Was there damage to the lungs? We don’t think so. Was there damage to the brain? We don’t think so.” Bouchard, however, cautioned that doctors at Sacré-Coeur will carry out medical imaging to determine the extent of the worker’s injuries. Surgery was likely, he added. F1 fans don't like winners by all accounts... any driver that's successful has a bout if hate. When his form dips, or he moves to Ferrari.... he'll be loved. And agreed on the marshal. Hate situations like this.
Did something happen to Rosberg today btw? Seemed odd how he fell away. Gutted for Button, seems to have lost all positivity.
Was a bit weird today, watched first 30 laps on mute and just finished the race on iplayer. Was a pretty enjoyable race.
I hear ya... he said something like "I don't see how we can turn this around" in an interview with Buxton. He looked defeated.
