When Elvis Costello was trying to get a record deal he could not get one as all he was ever told was "sorry mate you sound to much like Graham Parker".

I think there was room for both myself
 
I was playing a Tull album in the car once when giving a lift to my daughter (14 at the time) and 3 of her mates, their band was playing in a Battle of the Bands, her mates had never heard Tull. Within a week they had all gone out and bought the CD and raved over it.

I think it just proves that kids nowadays just listen to what the likes of Simon Cowell and the big record companies tell them to listen to. When I think back to when I was a teenager we went out looking for the "underground music" as everyone wanted to be the first to find a new band. Now they just sit on their arses and wait for it to be spoon fed yo them.

My three kids like a wide variety of music from all eras and are always raiding my cd's and albums for stuff

I'm not sure that the kids (teenagers) are any lazier than they were in the 60's. Most people only listened to what was on the radio or in the clubs. It wasn't until Underground properly split from mainstream people really started looking. I think!
