A block slides from rest down a frictionless incline of 40 degrees. The incline is 2.5 metres long. at the bottom is a small curved section that joins a rough section of level ground. This curved section is of negliable length. The block travels and additional 3 metres before stopping. What is the coefficiant of friction of the rough section of ground?
I knew you would google, cut and paste hence the reason I picked one where the answer was incorrect. The correct answer is: On the rough surface, kinetic energy lost = work done against friction divided by the mass ergo 1/2x m v^2 = u m g s p, where 'u' is the coefficient of friction 1/2 x m x 2 g L sin(theta) = u m g p S so that u = L sin(theta) / S = 2.5 x sin(40) / 3 = 2.5 x0.7848 / 3 = 0.46 Easy peasy.
