If some jumped up toff picked up the ball in the middle of a kick around then I'd be trying to RUGBY tackle him too... It is football now although I will say that all those crap Spectrum games in the late 80s/early 90s had a fair split between football and soccer titles. Never called it soccer meeself though...
spent the last 10 years re educating the locals that it is called football even the nzrfu has dropped the football from their title (not that that was anything to do with me)
I've got another Welsh boy on board. If I could get the Scottish vote out I reckon we'd still have a chance.
Seems the majority on here got it way wrong! Soccer is the correct term for the game, and the origin of the word âsoccerâ. For all you out there who love to complain when Americans, and certain others, call âFootballâ, âSoccerâ, you should know that it was the British that invented the word and it was also one of the first names of what we now primarily know of as âFootballâ. In fact, in the early days of the sport among the upper echelons of British society, the proper term for the sport was âSoccerâ. Not only that, but the sport being referred to as âSoccerâ preceded the first recorded instance of it being called by the singular word âFootballâ by about 18 years. This happening when it became more popular with the middle and lower class. When that happened, the term âFootballâ gradually began dominating over âSoccerâ and the then official name âAssociation Footballâ. Quality stuff Jack lad! We ain't lost this yet. I've just been on the Celtic board trying to mobilise Scottish support. It ain't over till Flyer sings!
It doesnt matter what it was called 1st, what matters is what its been called for the last 100 years. If you want to go by that logic then teams should be know for their 1st kits and not the colours theyve been using for decades.
Just done a rallying call to all Jacks! Should tip things in the right direction Hoopster mate...........................
Oddly enough though Super, according to what I've read, the English used "Soccer" right up to the 70's! My old man told me that in the 60's, his mates from Shepherds Bush all referred to it as Soccer! I wonder if there's any guys on here born in the forties that could confirm that? My aim is to RECLAIM THE NAME for you English boys!!!
Nice one JACK. Sooper is right. There appears to be a clear Anglo / Celtic divide on this one. Interesting.
Regardless of the derivation of the word "soccer", the sport is football and the club is a football club There are two great sports called football - North American football needs a new name - if it had one we could stop referring to soccer
