I personally felt he was our best CB last season, although across the breadth of the season Maya was the most consistent performer I thought in the spell from early November to the New Year before he got injured Fonte was an absolute rock and it was the best any of our CBs played across an extended period.
I think Dejan is really the driving force in the partnership but Jose deserves plenty of credit too so far, he's certainly been a lot less tidy and efficient with his work but effective all the same.

Pretty much anything Putin disapproves of. He especially disapproves of the "love that dare not speak it's name".
I've always liked Fonte a bit more than Yoshida.
Yoshida is faster and the master of the last-ditch tackle. Fonte is better in the air, and I think the way he positions himself works better in MP's scheme. It's a lot like Cork vs Wanyama, really. I generally prefer the bigger, range-y guys over the high workrate/quick guys. IMO, Fonte is also less a little less prone to the bad mistake than Yoshida.
I don't know if any of the CB's are really anything more than average, including Lovren. But who cares? They're getting the job done. If the way MP plays means we don't need awesome CB's to have an awesome defense, then by all means let's save some money and spend it on attackers.

The big bonus with our current defensive pairing is they are equally capable of driving up field and passing the ball. I like Maya but he can't pick out a pass!
This thread got me thinking, how do you pronounce his name? Do you say Font or Fontay? I know correct pronunciation is Font but I prefer Fontay.
He said a while back that he doesn't care, but Font is correct. The "e" is silent in many Portugese names.
Anyone else noticed what lovely eyes he has?
If thousands of people mispronounced my name I would get pretty pissed off. I'd be surprised if Jose didn't secretly hate that chant
When Jose first turned up at Saints, I think we all called him Fontay, and then some spotty herbert of a commentator on the TV called him Font, and we all cried NO..! But we were wrong. Thing is, I prefer Fontay and I think most people do, and Jose doesn't care either way.
And another thing, when commentators still rightly refer to him as Font, it still rankles. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to it.
I always go with Fontay. All our fans called him that back in league one when he came to the club so it stuck. I know the commentators always call him Font but isn't that just because it's the English way of pronouncing it? I hope it's not Font in Portuguese too.
