The one who left was Niki Sullivan. He was pictured on their 1st albums which was why the bloke mouthing off thought there were 4 of them. Waylon Jennings hooked up with Holly after he split from the original Crickets.
According to this article ( may or may not be accurate), it seems Jennings had a spell with The Crickets when Holly played with them. That's how I recall it - had a big argument with one of my ex-bosses (around '72 when I came over here) who mentioned that fact. Who knows ? http://www.historybyzim.com/2012/06/buddy-holly-waylon-jennings/
"In 1958, Holly broke with producer Petty and moved to New York to be more involved with the publishing and recording businesses. Allison and Mauldin chose not to move and returned to Lubbock. Holly now recorded under his own name with the studio musicians Tommy Allsupand Carl Bunch. Waylon Jennings toured with him shortly after the Crickets folded. Allison and Mauldin looked forward to rejoining Holly after he returned from a winter tour through the northern Midwest. In the meantime, Mauldin, Allison, and Sonny Curtis (a friend and collaborator of Holly's) began recording new songs as the Crickets, with vocals by Earl Sinks. While they were recording, it was announced that Holly had died in a plane crash while on tour. " Jennings had known Holly in Lubbock but hadn't been part of the Crickets. Sonny Curtis took over vocals for the Crickets. However he made more from writing. He wrote Walk Right Back, I Fought The Law And The Law One, and Love You More Than I Can Say. Leo Sayer covered that but I can remember when I was 10 or 11 getting sick of hearing the original by Bobby Vee as it seemed to be on every juke box in cafes and the amusement arcade in Brid every time you walked through.
I'm not totally sure, but I think there may have been a mild fight over ownership of the "Crickets" name when Holly went to NY & Allison & Mauldin stayed behind. The "Winter Dance Tour " may have billed BH with "The Crickets" despite a different makeup than the original 3some - but Jennings was one of them on that tour. It's interesting that both the the articles you & I quote have blaring errors in them. In my quote - rather than the "Beatles", the quote says "Beetles" !! In your quote, they mention "I fought the law but the law one", instead of "I fought the law & the law won" !! Can believe any of this fake old news can we ? Bottom line to me - Buddy Holly was the greatest ever. Still have a 7" reel to reel tape with every officially recorded BH song ever published. Copied from singles & albums imported from the US by my old school pal's dad who was in the Merch & brought them back with him. The acetate's probably toast by now !
Indeed it was. Good memory. edit: Didn't the Beatles toy withe the idea of calling themselves "The Silver Beetles", or is my brain as addled as I think it is ?
Not sure if this clears anything up, but the '58/'59 Winter Dance Party Tour billed the major artists as follows: please log in to view this image They all follow the < 3 min rule btw Just for Ron
Did you know that there have been 87 members of Fleetwood Mac, 14 members of the Rolling Stones, and 27+thousand members of the London Philharmonic. Ask me who the originals were, I couldn't possibly tell you Mattie
There was only Fleetwood Mac to me, Green, McVie, Fleetwood, Kirwan and Spencer. The Drifters have had their fair share as well.
