Good company man...great place Leeds for music (LUU). Was there from '65-'72, heavily involved with the Ents Committee during my time there. MK studied English @ LU. He was 3-4 years younger than me. Lived on Broomfield Crescent, back side of Headingley Cricket Ground ( & Leeds R.L. of course), for 5 of those years, so OO & Skyrack were my locals.. Packhorse at lunchtime naturally ! Condolences on the loss of your old mate.
I was 82-84. Brief spell in Chapeltown which was an eye opener for East Riding village boy, then lived in digs every side of Headingley complex.. Indeed OO and Skyrack were my locals. Don't recall Packhorse. Was great for music. Watched many an up and coming band at Uni and Poly, including Culture Club I think the week before they went straight into No 1. Also Dead Kennedys (though cos I was pissed have only recently verified this from a gig list on the internet).. I can very clearly remember the support band.. Lord Mountbattens Bits n Pieces .
Give or take 17-27 years we would have been neighbours, getting pissed in the same boozers in Headingly "Who Live at Leeds" - Best concert I ever saw in my life - the original I might add, missed the reunion do : Check out the last few pages, which lists all the gigs at LUU between '69 and '06. I've been back to the LUU library several times to go back through the archived Leeds Student Union weekly paper ("Union News") to complete the list of gigs that happened between '65 and '70 when I was there. Almost complete, but I need at least one more visit. Brilliant venue - best time of my life. Hope you can read the attached, it may help fill in a few gaps in your memory of the gigs you attended way back when (see pages 12 - 17). http://www.leeds.ac.uk/thewholiveatleeds/assets/TheWhoConcertBooklet.pdf Original set list: Original setlist Recorded at Leeds University on 14 February 1970 on Pye Mobile Unit No. Title Lead vocals Length 1. Wow, that's like a hall of fame of bands!. I was at the Poly and rarely ventured to the Uni. Was wondering how I allowed that gig list to pass me by but then saw the cost of The Who tix. Was a lot of money for a hard up student. I'm gonna search for a similar list for the Poly. I had mates who were on Security, so would just wander in. Plus if I remember right the gigs were always on a Thursday when there was always a beer or spirit promotion, so one drink was better than half price. As skint students, that became our Saturday night. A minor element of my degree was Statistics, the only lecture was on a Friday morning. I finally met the course tutor at the end of year 'do'.!
Please forgive it not being live. Fats Waller once played live for Al Capone at his birthday party so was never regular at Reading, if you get me?
