Really? I never had much confidence in Flitney, I think L2 was a little beyond his capabilities, BBS was probably his level. I don't think he'll be able to move up a divison and still do a job.
Fair play to him though if he requested to leave, it is good to see a player who wants to play rather than pick up a wage packet
I guess that is the point, Flitney was only ever "ok", he was never outstanding and never showed any potential for improving. When he was between the sticks, I felt Flitney was doing ok, accept for his kicking. Then he got injured and Gazza stepped in and we never looked back. I would still have kept him as the number two keeper though, out of our current four keepers, although probably a bit unfair on Forecast as I have no personal spectator experience to measure him against.
Flitney has not been "shown the door". He has done a financial deal that suits him Gills and Eastleigh. Eastleigh have issued a flattering press relaese talking about his "impressive loan spell".
!3 months ago there ws a thread about player of the season and the concensus was that it lay between Jackman and Flitney who had been pretty well faultless up to that point if unspectacular. Given that he had been Edwin van der Sar's apprentice at Fulham, unspectacular was a compliment. Flitney's problem was that he carried an injury in December and January which stopped him kicking properly and then he was so handicapped at Accrington that he had to be subbed by Gazza.
So does this have any relevance to Gills current situation given that by common consent Nelson's poition is unassailable? Well it does if Nelson got injured tomorrow so we would have to fall back on the hugely suspect Forecast (just google the reports on Forecast in the past). Instead of having the thoroughly reliable Flitney to see the team through to promotion, we have the ticking time bomb that is Forecast. Sheer MAdness.
