The club has cancelled Flitney's contract... no great surprise as he has slide down the pecking order since Allen came in.

I think I read somewhere yesterday it was at Flitney's request. Although another MA decision that baffles me, more from the outset of his return from injury, rather than the present circumstances.

Really? I never had much confidence in Flitney, I think L2 was a little beyond his capabilities, BBS was probably his level. I don't think he'll be able to move up a divison and still do a job.

Fair play to him though if he requested to leave, it is good to see a player who wants to play rather than pick up a wage packet

Flintly did well last season, was one of the best players before christmas then lost a bit of form and then got injured. Nelson has also lost a bit of form which happens. Although he has had a excellent season. Flintly is at a age where he wants to play on a regular basis not sit around.

When he was between the sticks, I felt Flitney was doing ok, accept for his kicking. Then he got injured and Gazza stepped in and we never looked back. I would still have kept him as the number two keeper though, out of our current four keepers, although probably a bit unfair on Forecast as I have no personal spectator experience to measure him against.

I guess that is the point, Flitney was only ever "ok", he was never outstanding and never showed any potential for improving.

Flitney has not been "shown the door". He has done a financial deal that suits him Gills and Eastleigh. Eastleigh have issued a flattering press relaese talking about his "impressive loan spell".
!3 months ago there ws a thread about player of the season and the concensus was that it lay between Jackman and Flitney who had been pretty well faultless up to that point if unspectacular. Given that he had been Edwin van der Sar's apprentice at Fulham, unspectacular was a compliment. Flitney's problem was that he carried an injury in December and January which stopped him kicking properly and then he was so handicapped at Accrington that he had to be subbed by Gazza.
So does this have any relevance to Gills current situation given that by common consent Nelson's poition is unassailable? Well it does if Nelson got injured tomorrow so we would have to fall back on the hugely suspect Forecast (just google the reports on Forecast in the past). Instead of having the thoroughly reliable Flitney to see the team through to promotion, we have the ticking time bomb that is Forecast. Sheer MAdness.

bristol407 the best way to play with any goalkeeper in the team, is to keep the ball well away from their reach !

Flitneys kicking was suspect long before his injury. I agree, however, that he was in the running for POTY until his injury ,but equally Nelson is a better all round keeper. I think its a bit unfair to criticsise Forecast when all you've got to go on are reports when you've never seen him play (unless you went to Preston, and by all accounts he wasn't too bad there). I reckon the keeper coach at Gills and MA must think he's better than Flitney or else they would have sent him back to Southampton, and I bet we sign him permanently in the summer ,so clearly in that case there was no point keeping Flitney on the payroll

Terminated by mutual consent / shown the door; you say tomato, I say tomato (Ok I am aware that doesn't really work when typed)

I think your assessment of Forecast is hugely unfair, I have seen Tommy F twice in a Gills shirt; at Accrington when he came on as sub and the PNE match. He couldn't really do anything about the three goals he conceeded in that match and generally look competent, on par with what Flitney offers at least, but after two games it is hard judge.

Good luck to him. Not a bad keeper, definitely good enough to stay at this level, not sure about higher but did a solid job. People are talking about Flitney's kicking but Nelson's kicking is hardly his best trait either. Nelson is generally a better keeper there's no denying that but I didn't Roscoe's distribution was that bad. The signing of Forecast did baffle me really, four goalkeepers for a team at League Two level is rather rare. Im quite confident that he can play in the league again, if not definitely Conference.
