Like any music it evolves. regional sounds to, 'Trad' to Planxty/ moving hearts to the pogues, dropkick murphy's et al.....there is a clear line.
I've a thing for the traditional music, great memories of proper ceilis and fleadhs. Spent 5 years of summers in the Dun Na Gall Gaeltacht, Loch an Iuir. Best memories of my life so far, 200 girls, about 70 fellas all in the arse hole of nowhere with nothing to do but touch each other. This is literally the 'town' centre of where I spent 3 weeks every summer http://googlesightseeing.com/maps?p...&cbll=54.99864,-8.289592&cbp=12,278.71,,0,3.7 Used to bring an ounce of dope and have to wander 12 miles to the nearest pub that would serve us alcohol.
**** me that place looks grim but 3 birds to each geezer and an ounce of dope in your pocket sounds like a plan.
Except now the locals are coming out with their hurleys and battering seven colours of ****e out of the people attending
They wouldn't know how to hold the caman in Donegal. (I Know this is a gross generalisation, we have 4 Donegal lads at the club and a match there tomorrow)
Lunasa are pretty much the only "traditional" Irish band I know of, what with not being irish and all that. They are top class, seen them about five times over here...Michael McGoldrick is also a pretty handy flautist, but is a Manc of Irish descent I think??
